WARNING: wet firewall mats in 5th gen civics.
For some reason almost all 5th gens have wet firewall mats, right beside the ECU and under the pedals. I can't really understand if it's my feet that bring in the water or if there is a leak...anyway since my old hatch had that problem and nothing was done the floors started to rust bad so to prevent this from happening on my new hatch, which also had a wet firewall mat i dried all the wet spots with a heat gun. This was not it, a week later the mat was just as wet as before, i could squeeze it and easily fill up a cup of dirty water.
My solution. Pretty simple, took an exacto knfie and i cut out the entire firewall from under the dash very neatly so now you can just see the metal. I have no carpet in my car at the moment and so far no water thank god. I highly suggest to do this to get rid of all that moisture.

Have you looked for leaks around the windshield? Or, holes in the floor that could have a plastic plug missing?

I have the same problem. Everytime I lift up my floor mat on the passenger side, I see water bubbles everywhree and it's damp

Yes, there is probably a leak. I doubt that it is a firewall plug. Somebody told me that there was a recall on the windshield seals. I would check into that. My car leaked too.

According to this page http://autos.yahoo.com/cg/usedreview...year=1992-1995, it is caused by "insufficient sealer on the seam at the firewall."

yes indeed. had that problem on my 92 and 93 hatches. but 93 wasd pass side leaking and the 92 has a drivers side leak.
best way to identify it is to remove the carpet and mat,
close doors and windows
then run a hose over the front of the car
and keep an eye out to trace any leaks that you find.
seal 'em up!
fix it before your floorboards rust!

looked at the heater core? when it leaks the antifreeze/water combination tends to leak down onto the floor boards and that area.

That is good fix for short term but why not spend some time and actually fix the problem. I had a huge leak in my car. I took out my whole interior and drove around for a few weeks with just my seat in till I found all the leaks. What i found.
Where the winshield meets the body along the bottom right edge there was a leak. Way to test remove the black plastic from the outside take windex or soapy water and spray around bottom of window edge. Take air tool and blow air and where you see it bubble you got a leak.
Next was the weather stripping was almost non exsistent. Got new weather stripping from Home depot and fixed that.
NExt leak was from my sunroof seal that was shot and to top it off the kid I bought the car from discontted the drain hose for the sunroof that is supposed to drain the water when the seal goes bad. That was disconnected and left to drip into my car. Fixed that drove around a few more weeks no more leaks. Put back together and works like a charm. Hope that helps
