Default VTEC PROBLEMS

I have a 96 type r swap with a built head and RMF header on a 96 civic. I'm using a d16 stock exhaust wich is like 1.5in . will that cause it to run wierd? it seems to bog down when vtec hits. it won't go past 5500rpm (vtec), it hits as if that were the rev limiter . help please!

Any CEL's?

The stock exhaust is pretty restrictive. You probably want 2-2.5".

That should be okay. Stock exhausts are generally more restrictive, but that is certainly better than what is on there now.

A bigger exhaust is recommended but a small one shouldn't restrict it from going past a certain rpm.

Check your oil level and cels.

Your injectors could be too small, vtec solenoid bad, iacv not hooked up right. When did this start happening?

I read some people's cluster not reading right. One guy said he it showed 5500rpm but it was revving to 8k.

And built head and 1.5" exhaust? You need a bigger one for sure XD

injectors arent to small cause it worked before with the small exhaust. & cluster isnt bad it cause when engine its not warmed up vtec doesnt hit and goes to 9000rpm. an vtec solenoid i think its good cause vtec does engage but then hits a rev limiter like sound. i started happening slowly, vtec would hit and seem like it would loose more power every time. but now it just seems to rev or loose injectiong maybe?

You had the built head before the problem running the small injectors? And make sure you don't have the iacv plug switched with something else.

In the time you are taking to post to this thread you could have gone out to the car and pulled the codes.

Ground it out and take it for a drive.

in one post your saying vtec isnt working and then you say it does. does vtec happen at all???? vtec should happen at 5800 in a b18c type-r or 4500 in a gsr b18c1 or 6000 in a b18c5.

please tell us all that is done to the engine...you say you have a built head: is it with stock parts again or do you have cams and all that? if you dont you never mentioned anything about having a chipped ecu and tune and then thats a problem?

you said it had a d16 in it before i know there are a few wires you have to extend to make fit right and work correctly also/

i just re-read your post and tried to understand what you were saying...... are you saying that at 5500rpm's it cuts in and out like a rev limiter? please stop refuring to 5500rpm as vtec!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you have a check engine light on your ecu is in limp mode which wont let the car rev past a certain engine speed which is 5500 for you to prevent engine damage!

so if your car doesnt go past 5500rpm your ecu is in limp mode and wont let vtec activate either to prevent damage etc.

Really? Wow just dont say anything, you have no clue. The stock injectors are fine, Car will still run to redline even with no Vtec and a bad IACV will not cause the car to cut at 5500K. Op check for codes ans what ECU are you running? Yes you should have a larger exhaust but the stock one will not cause this issue.

its a B18c with crower stage 2 cams and valve train. I AM NOT USING ANY D16 WIRING. only D16 exhaust. MY VTEC HITS, BUT AS SOON AS IT DOES IT HITS SOME SORT IF REV LIMITER. I HAVE A CHIPPED P28 WITH TYPE R BASE MAP. BUT THE PROBLEM JUST HAPPENED RECENTLY. IVE RAN WITH THAT ECU FOR LIKE A COUPLE YEARS. IDK THE EXACT RPM VTEC HITS BUT ITS SOMEWHERE AROUND 5500-6000RPM.

Reset ecu but if it really is in limp mode, it'll go back in limp mode within a day or sooner since something triggered it to go in limp mode and obv won't get out until you find out why or get it foxed
