Ok fellow acura and honda ridersi need your help.. See i have a 99 civic lx with a D16y8 motor also a vtec but my first engine called it quits.. So i had a engine swap. And now my vtec solenoid is not hooked up.. Meaning my oil pressure switch has two wires showing but not connector nore does my oil pressure ground it is the same.. And i know that my original motor was vtec also and i know the ecu is vtec ready..so my question is how can i get this bad boy up and running

Re: vtec not hooked up
No, the original motor in that car was not VTEC. The original EJ6 (96-00 DX and LX) motor is a D16Y7. You say your ECU is VTEC-ready, but given the confusion on what your original motor is, we're going to have to question that assumption as well. Remove your kick panel, and inspect the ECU for a code stamp. It should either be a P2P or P2E. Tell us which one it is. Unless your car's wiring harness was swapped, there shouldn't be plugs for VTEC.

P2E. There is no such thing as a Honda PSE ECU. So no, your ECU is not "VTEC-ready". You have a non-VTEC ECU, and a non-VTEC wiring harness. You have three options. A) leave it as it is. B) wire in VTEC, and buy and install a VTEC ECU. C) Swap your wiring harness with an EX harness that DOES have VTEC wired in already, and buy and install a VTEC ECU.

Look guys I'm not a certified mechanic yet... So im just a lil mechanically inclined...i understand that i may have a d16y8 with vtec engine swap. and that the original engine was indeed a d16y7 noo vtec so therefore my P2E ecu is not vtec ready..all i know is that i have a ex model engine in this lx? Or Ex? 4 door..

Re: vtec not hooked up
How do we know if its a d16y8 tranny when you stated it was a lx honda civic?
If you just replace the engine than you cannot hook up vtec. Even if you find the P2P ecu and engine harness you will have CEL for transmission codes. The d16y8 transmission is diffferent from the dx/lx transmissions, you're just gonna have to drive it as is with no vtec.

Uh, if you aren't throwing a CEL for your transmission lockup solenoid, you have an LX transmission. Given how little you seem to know about your own car, you need to check the head stamp as well, and make sure you actually have a Y8 head - the previous owner may have blown the block and just replaced it with a Y8 block, and left everything else Y7.
You'll find the head stamp on the front of the head, between the exhaust runners. It should follow the format of [letter] [number] [letter] - [number]

You have a couple of options at this point:
1. Find a 99-00 automatic EX engine harness and use a 99-00 automatic P2P ECU. You'll have to manually wire in the 2nd oxygen sensor as the EX has it on the cabin harness. You'll also need a 96-00 EX automatic transmission.
2. Use your harness and use a 99-00 automatic P2P ECU. Add the wiring for VTEC and the knock sensor. You'll also need a 96-00 EX automatic transmission.
