Default VTEC not engaging??

I have a 95 civic ex.. i got the single cam vtec. (I'm kind of new to the vtec thing) Anyways, so I'm driving the car yesterday and today and I take it through the rpm's and I get to around 6k and it sounds that its topping out for that gear.... I see that the rpm redline is at 7200.... as I was going through the rpm's i didnt feel that bump that vtec usually gives.. so I figure I need to buy a new solenoid.

Also is it hard to cahnge out the seal in the distributor? Mechanic told me it would cost me $200+ to get it fixed. If I can Id rather do it myself.
thanks

On D series you don't hear it hit Vtec like a B series does. and with no check engine lights, it should be fine. go check your engine code and come back and post it pls.

dont know if it is the same with sohc's but i know with dohc vtecs that when you get low on oil vtec kicks in and out , check your oil and see if your temperature sensor is working, had a friend with a b16 crx and his temperature sensor went bad and vtec wouldnt engage,

Are you shitting me?

The bump that VTEC gives?

It's a Z6, you generally don't feel ANYTHING when VTEC hits, see no VTEC hear no VTEC, feel no ******* VTEC.

Listen around 5500 - the tone will have changed by then, but you won't hear the "crack" like a B16.

My diagnosis:
Your car's 100% fine you just think b/c it has VTEC it's gonna chirp the tires half way through the RPM band.

Even that's not a guarantee.

It's a guarantee that the ECU is sending the signal, though non-proper grounding or mechanical issues can still stop VTEC from engaging.

Yeah on d16s, you dont really hear any type of crossover, and about your dizzy seal, tell him to f- off. that is probably one of the easiest seals to change. good luck man

There you go. You sure did explain that well! hahaha!

But yeah your car is probaly fine. With every thing being stock your car is probaly quiet as hell. So, it is probly just very hard to hear it crossover. the easiest way would be to go thru a gear (3rd). Slowly bring the rpm's up and listen real close to the motor or exhaust tone and see if it changes at all then you will know.

I would change the oil, spark plugs, sp wires, cap and rotor. That will give you a lot cleaner, smoother running motor if it is needed. Then, you can go from there.
Good luck

Another thing, is after you do your quick basic tune-up. Take that thing all the way to the redline and shift . Run it how it was made to run.

That seal is a 5-10 min.. job. The cam seals would run probaly 200. But, that is also only a 20-40min.. job!
