my fiend has a 93 si and it's vtec kicks in a lot louder and harder than my 99 ex vtec.
So without modding the engine i can use a better vtec, a junkyard vtec ?

LOL! Wow.
Sorry to disappoint you but its all in your head. If it feels faster its probably because his car is lighter. I don't even think I've actually ever heard VTEC engage on a SOHC

you need to learn what vtec is. go to howstuffworks.com and read up on variable valve timing

You, sir, need to learn what VTEC really is. It's not a little gremlin that is under your hood and if you switch gremlins then you suddenly have a better one. You both have SOHC VTEC, and there's really no difference between the two.
So to answer your question, not only no, but hell no.

I can hear it on my z6, but I have to be the only one around when I'm driving.. Like no other noise other than the wind rushing by, my exhaust and the VTEC.

if you changed your engagement point, you change how much the sound of your motor differs when you crossover into vtec. i've heard it on a single cam before, but not with a stock intake.

my Single Cam can be easily heard from me with I/h.
On the highway, my friend couldn't stop laughing about how loud he could hear vtec from me, from another car, rolling next to me lol
and he has a B-series

Vtec can be heard regardless if it's a SOHC or DOHC. A lot more noticable on the DOHC motors. Pretty much you'll have to have an aftermarket intake to hear VTEC on the singles. But even then, it's still not that loud and you don't really go anywhere. As long as u got a twin cam VTEC, you'll not only hear it, but you'll feel it as well.

All vtec does is allow more fuel and air into your engine and it instantly changes your combustion times to give you almost 40% - 60% increase in Horsepower. Go to a bookstore, pick up a copy of "High Performance HONDA builders handbook" -'joe pettitt' You will seriously learn what vtec does inch by inch and so for. for 20$ and about 200 pages, I couldn't go wrong with that. You get lots of torquing charts, formulas, and tuning tips from jackson racing, RPS, and many many more top notch companies!

ok ok u must be a kid or just got into the scene hehe
SOHC VTEC motors are Weak. Ive owned a 99 civic ex 2dr, So i know..
If your planning on keeping the SOHC VTEC EX d16y8 motor.. might as well go Turbo
Ive heard of SUpercharged d16y8's Losing to b16 hatchs Like that.. so the powerplant is pretty weak from the Beginning..
The reason why his VTEC engages louder is maybe because of his Intake???.. I dont know.. i notice LOUDER engagments with a SHortram over a CAI
