Default VSS not working - easy fix

A while back my speedometer started to drop to 0 intermittently and then kick back in and give me a reading. Then it would conk out and then start working again and the same thing over.

If you open up the VSS you'll find a wheel (which is positioned horizontally like merry-go-round) and a spring in the middle with a ball bearing in the top of the spring which makes contact with the top of the VSS (the spring/ball bearing must be some kind of electrical contact).

What I noticed with the VSS that wasn't working properly is that the ball bearing at the top of the spring was worn down completely flat. On my good VSS the ball bearing was hardly worn and would clearly make good contact with the top of the VSS if the top were on. My thought is that by simply stretching out the spring on the broken VSS (so that it can make good contact with the top of the VSS) it would start working again.

I haven't tested this yet but I think it would work.

I would think replacing the ball bearing would be a better solution. Just need to know the size.

Or have a day at the junk yard popping open VSS's and dropping the ball bearings into your pocket.
