VIN question
Can the dealer or someone scan the barcode on the tag on the door jam with the VIN ? The number are half there, but the code is fine. Also can tthey scan either of the white tags on the transmission and get the VIN. Does a 93 Civic have any VIN tags on the motor or any body panels , i'm looking to get a car from a police impound, but i want to be able to get the VIN so i can get it registered. Thanks.

Re: VIN question (Jmunk)
A smog tech always scans in the bar code when they smog your car. However, if it's a police recovery at an auction, you may want to make sure that it is a legit tag on the door jam because they can be replaced from a stolen car, however removing one isn't easy since it's on there pretty good and it takes some time & skill to put a new one on flawlessly so it looks like it came from the factory.
On the firewall, next to the fuel filter, there is a stamp in the metal with the VIN for the chassis.

So it's either been filled in with body filler or grinded off? Most likely that car was stolen before and they were trying to put a 'legit' VIN onto it. I'd stay away from it but if you really want to get it, you're going to have to go through your local Highway Patrol office and have them assign you a new VIN and stamp it onto the car in numerous places. Otherwise, there is no way you can register it as is with your local DMV, even if you tell them you got it from a police auction. Picking up that car, you go through the same steps as registering a RHD car and depending on your local HP, they may or may not give you a VIN number, even if you have the proper documentation. It's up to their descretion.
