Alright I'm about to leave to go look at a Civic, 2000 hatch DX, mint, for a good price. The guy says the tranny sometimes hums... only in 3rd gear... and then goes away....

So, uh... any idea what it is? Common problem?

He told me he took it to a mechanic, and he said it's a bad bearing (?), and it's $400 to fix, BUT, he said that basically the problem is not going to get worse or anything, just that it will make a noise and that's it, so he never fixed it.

Does this sound right? Any idea what else it could be ? I, to be honest don't really want to drop 400$ if the tranny is fine and it's just a hum only in 3rd... so is it okay to keep it like this, for like a year?

The problem will continue to get worse no matter which bearing it is, and eventually it will need fixing.

I see you are from Toronto...head down to Scarborough to Tiger Japanese and pick up a D15B tranny for cheaper than repairing that tranny.

Hmm okay thanks. Just checked and they're like 350. How do I know that it doesn't have the same issue though, if it's a common problem?

Anyways, it's an 00 Hatch, basically a 1 owner car, 190k km (120k miles for you US folk), owned by an older guy (50s?) who just used it to save on gas (so not hacked up at all), no problems at all, except for well the bearing heh. It's really mint. 2500$ is what I got him down to, but I think that's the certified price I'll see if I can get him down to a bit less as is. Good deal? I can has Civic??
