Valve Adjustment ? Where do I stick the feeler gauge?
I've done a few valve adjustments before in the past, but I have never seen any pictures or diagrams of where to stick the feeler gauge. I just want to clarify this question with anybody who know's the correct spot to stick the feeler gauge.
I usually stick it between the rocker arm and the cam lobe. Is this the correct spot? Just need some reasurance from some tech experts out there.
Thanx,
Nick
*edit* the valve adjustments I attempted in the past, all came out good. At least I think, because the tranny was shot so there was always a ticking sound.

yes just line it up with the top of the valve (retainer/spring) and then slide it between the cam lobe/rocker arm and there should be some slight hesitation when sliding the feeler gauge in and out if not then it needs adjusting.

I'm not sure about inches, but I went by the helms manual:
.20 mm intake
.25 mm exhaust
btw: these are specs for D-series

How difficult is a valve adjustment (if you've never done one before, but are pretty technically savvy?) Just asking cuz I think I'm due pretty soon, but would rather not let another shop rape me on prices...

Its not that hard just read the manual and follow directons. To make the job easier get some 45 or 90 degree feller gauges and a valve adjustment tool.

Re: (FrostySol)
You know those clearance a few posts up are NOT for the method originally posted.
When doing a valve adjustment, you stick the feeler gauge between the top of the valve stem, and the bottom of the adjusting nut!
When placing the feelers between cam lobe and rocker pad, the gemoetry is different and you hafta use different specs...

Lets say I want to do it the way I posted. "between cam lobe & rocker pad"
What would be the correct measurments for the D series valve adjustment?

NO! those specs are to be used when measuring between the top of the valve stem and the bottom of the adjusting screw!!!!!!
EDIT: if you need me to take a picture of where to place the feeler (to use the helms clearances)... just tell me

Re: (degooser)
That pic is of a B series (obviously), the dseries is a lot easier...
I can't figure out why you wouldn't just do set the valves the way the books says to....by "feeling" the gap between the adjusting screw and the valve stem top.
It's too difficult to get between the cam lobe and the follower...isn't it?
P.S. I'm talking specifically about D series...

Re: (axhandler)
Alright guys. I used the helms manual and found out where exactly you place the feeler gauge.
My first attempt, I measured between the cam lobe & the rocker pad. (using the specs I mentioned above)
Results: Ticka Ticka tappa tappa tappa ticka ticka ........
There was a more noticeable change in the taps, as if it got worse.
The second attempt, I used the same measurements. But instead I measured between the Valve stem end & under the locknut. (as shown in the sketch I made)
Results: vroooooMmmmmmm (Purred like a kitten)
Second grade drawing
Hopefully this helps anybody who is in question.
P.S. Thanks for the help fellas

Yup. I didn't realize how easy it actually was.

so for a b series do it this way or what?
are you doing a valve adjustment on a d series?
