totaled 2000 civic dx
alright so a week ago yesterday, my dumb *** 17 year old brother(sadly i have to call him brother) stole my dad's car when they were at church. he crashed it and totaled it. he hit some other car. now since he is not included in the insurance, they wont cover ANYTHING. and my dad's civic is at the impound. STUPID COPS DIDNT ARREST HIM FOR NOT HAVING A LICENSE AND HITING ANOTHER CAR!!!! so yea. oh and he hasnt come back home since then. too scared i guess. (IDIOT)
my question is, should he get it out and part the car out? the total to get the car out is $936.
the engine is a d16y7 and has about 250k on it. but it still ran GOOD AS HELL! the front end is the crashed part

DO IT!!!! it wouldnt be that hard to part it out to make the $936 impound money back. then post the shell up on craigslist, never know someone can always rebuild it back up.

Eran and I sold some parts from a car we parted and it was impossible to sell the stuff. We still have some of it now, resorting to throwing away a lot of stuff that didn't sell and seemed less likely to sell. A lot of the interior parts won't move (on enthusiast sites at least) because everyone wanted dark gray or black. Our interior we have parts for is light gray.
The car was a '98 EX coupe with front end damage. Auto, low mileage engine, white exterior, light gray interior.
We took parts we wanted, so we did make money that way. We got a power door conversion, power mirror conversion, full moonroof assembly, taillights, lots of bolts and clips... The floor was bent and carpet was water damaged thanks to being left outside too long. Seats were good, and went to the guy who helped get the car here since he needed a set.
The car, without an interior, with engine and transmission, was sold for $300 IIRC. not bad since that's how much the car cost to begin with.
Your dad should have taken the car out of the pound asap though.

Re: totaled 2000 civic dx
he didnt take it out cuz we were not sure if the insurance was going to look at it and decide if its totaled or not (thats IF they were going to cover it).
and my dad didnt want to pay the 936 to take it out if it was just going to sit on our drive way taking up space.
and no. i wont make up ****. i wont lie about how many miles it has on it.

If its a manual, maybe, if its an automatic its probably not worth it, things like pedals, shift linkage, mounts etc all sell if you can find someone doing a manual conversion, dash vents, cluster bezel, interior door panels etc usually sell well, people who buy riced out civics with painted interiors are always looking for that kinda stuff, uncut dash harness will sell, front knuckles if the wheel bearings are good, axles, engine and tranny, occasionally glass will sell. Manual racks will sometimes sell when someone wants to do something like an H-series swap. exterior trim pieces sell.

He should have gotten the car out the day it went in. Now the storage fees are stacking up
Put it this way;
If he gets the car out now it will 9xx dollars and he still has the chance to sell some of the parts and make some money back
If he doesnst get the car out, the storage fees are gonna keep piling, the tow yard will eventually take ownership of the car, it will be auctioned off, and whatever the difference is between the amount they sell it for and the amount that is owed on the bill will get sent to your dad. If he doesnt pay the bill it will go to collections and he'll get double fukkked

Oh, and I will mention that depending on the amount of damage there is, there could very well be more damaged than you would think about.
For example, the carpet like I mentioned. It can get wet easily. Ours also had a crushed mouse underneath it too. Then dash pieces. The first six inches or so of the floor was bent in from the accident. This means parts of the dash were difficult to remove. We ended up selling the car with the dash still in, just parts removed. I had trouble removing the glovebox even.
If it's a '99-'00 and it's not too damaged, you should be able to sell the heater box and climate control and such to someone wanting a conversion.

Re: totaled 2000 civic dx
I can almost guarentee you its not worth bothering with. Anyone in the business of buying and selling engines and transmissions to resell isn't going to give you much, D-series automatic trannys are next to impossible to sell, you might be able to sell the Y7, but I can't see you getting anymore than $400 out of it. automatic Y7 engine harness is not likely to sell. its about the least wanted 6th gen honda engine harness I can think of. Just to warn you the block and/or transmission may have been cracked in the impact. I can see you breaking even, thats about it, and in my mind thats pushing it.

oh and the car is pretty damaged.
the windshielf is completely messed up and on the pass. side its a little pushed out.
(im guessing the pass. wasnt wearing the seat belt and hit the windshield with their head popping it out) on the back there is blood. not a whole lot but a nice amount. and the front is messed up. like nasty messed up

considering i dont know you or your knowledge of cars the only advice i can give is if youve never completely torn a car down before it's worth doing it just for the learning experience. otherwise it just depends on the amount of damage done and the effort your willing to put into it.

Re: totaled 2000 civic dx
The whole wrecked car as it sits ain't worth $1,000
it wasn't worth much more than $1,000 before it was wrecked
leave it there
ain't worth the trouble

Re: totaled 2000 civic dx
The engine and trans is about all you're going to sell without working your *** off on enthusiast sites such as this one. They'll go for maybe 200 for both (maybe...tops...if they're low mileage..). Nothing on that car (including the engine) is really worth anything, especially since the front end has been nicely re-arranged, that takes care of everything up to the doors, you may be able to pawn off the power door assembly and a moonroof if it's gone one - and maybe some poor sole who needs seats will buy them, but none of the above is really a high demand item.
I'd be surprised if you broke even on just getting that car out of the impound lot.
I'd say leave it in there, let it rot, then let your brother rot. There's no excuse for that kind of stupidity.
This is all only if insurance won't do anything, if they will, then still, even if you get it out for 1k, then 2k in repairs or so, you'll spend more on getting the car back, in your dad's hands 100%, than you would just buying a new one.
EDIT:
PS: No offense or anything, but it's a 100% stock automatic DX, it's not highly sought after and there's nothing (besides POSSIBLY the engine) that's of real interest to a lot of people.
