Default Timing Question

Ok so my car (EJ8 w/ d16y8) has been mis-firing and what not for awhile so today I took the timing cover off to notice that my cam gear was not in the upwards position. Now at TDC I thought the cam shaft should also be facing up? It has a unorthodox pulley on it but Im taking that off an putting OEM back on. But was just making sure that it wasnt the camshaft causing it to misfire before I did all this.

If your car jump time your motor would be screwed and wouldn't start. As for your cam in the upward position that all depends on when you shut down the engine as it doesn't stay that way. But I think i'm confused on what all your looking for here
