Default Timing Belt question

I was wondering if a timing belt that is soon in need of changing would cause a CEL? Im currently looking at a 97 civic ex and the seller claims that the CEL is because the timing belt really needs to be changed soon.

No, a timing belt won't cause a CEL, the owner is lying. A broken timing belt will cause several check engine lights because your engine gets pretty screwed up.

If you want to know what the CEL is, Autozone does free scans for '96 and up vehicles.

Yeah you can get autozone to check your codes, or you could bypass the pin connector and find out the code yourself. Timing will nott throw a cel.
