they seem to fade easily.....the car is a daily driver and has a race here and there.

what are you using this car for? i mean really? a drag race every now and then or a full tilt autocross? i would say stick with oem, they work well, last long, and you probibly don't NEED any more. if you go out and get some wicked race pads then get ready to replace rotors before the pads,
thats whats happening at the track where i work, stock rotors just don't hold up to the race pads yet all the drivers want is max stopping power they don't even care how much it costs em in rotors and labor.
i autocross fairly regularly on the track and oem does pretty DAMN well. and its not "nice" racing either, its "full on beat the **** outta the car racing" but the napa "oem quality and durability" pads work fine. do you really need more?

Use the project U pads, it's about 3-4 mm thicker than stock. It's ceramic. I have a set of 96-up civic/ SI for the front for sale. I have some more in order for my 95 hatch with Integra suspension and brakes, front and rear. I'm using powerslot rotors all the way around. I think it's better than powerstop rotors.

I just got some metallic ones from autozone that are garanteed for life. same with the axles, so if they wear out or break you can get new ones for free.

I use AEM/Nissin pads religiously on my Civic LX, and they rock. No fade.
Only problem is they wear fast, so I have to buy a new set once every 16 months or so.
I buy from http://www.coximport.com/
$45.68 Front, $43.73 Rear
I was thinking about giving EBC green stuff a try, I've heard good reviews from my friends that use them. They cost about the same too.
It may sound like alot of money for a replaceable item, but why go cheap on such an important part?

I used the Hawk pads that came with my used brakes but I changed over to OEM cause they just kill the rotor. You WILL replace or resurface the rotors more often with anything other than OEM.

Axxis Ultimates are a good pad for the street. I've only faded them once at Mid-Ohio. They do dust a lot, but they don't squeek very much. Hawk HP+ pads are really good, but a bit much for the street. http://www.cobaltfriction.com

Just got done swapping my brakes out. Upgraded to GSR brakes front and rear and went with the Axxis Ultimate pads.....the stopping power over the stock civic brakes are just awesome . I went with the Axxis pads cuz i did not want the OEM pads, i wanted to try something different.
Couldn't tell ya anything about the long term affect with the pads but so far so good.

I have had my OEM pads on for almost THREE years now and they still look good. 47,000 miles on them.

Unless you...
a.) Lock the breaks up at every stop light
b.) Do 50,000 miles every 6 months or
c.) Do some SERIOUS autoxing
That is WAY overkill.

Re: Time for some new brake pads.........suggestions? (Eee Pee)
AEM/Nissen seems like a good way to go for the street. I have sold lots of these and am about to put a set on my hatch.
When to replace pads? I like to do mine when they are about 2/3 worn. even if everything is wearing fine it seems like the geometry of the caliper or something changes tword the end of the pad life. Plus this will give more mass to the breaking system which is always good since the only job of the brakes is to convert the inertia of the car into heat. more mass = bigger heat sink = more consistent stops.

as often as needed... you can replace them when there's still some pad left (better for caliper and brakes are not as effective at full stroke of the cylinder) but just blindly changing them is silly...
If they have less then a 1/8-1/4" of pad left they should be replaced.
