Ticking noise around 3K RPM????HELP HELP
I have a EG w/ b18c1 and ys1 trans both from 95 GSR. Driver's side motor mount needs to be replaced but I am positive that isn't where the noise is coming from. It almost sounds like a free piece of metal or loose bolt tapping....Any ideas, also it only happens when I am cruising around 3000 - 3200 RPM both in gear and in neutral. Possibly valvetrain??

Re: Ticking noise around 3K RPM????HELP HELP (Bee18Hatch)
Ok I have a JDM 2nd gen b16a in my 98 lx. And after I put the motor in I decided to change the head gasket. So after I did it I started to have a rattle, clicking, clunking kinda of sound out of my head. And it was right next to the distributor so I tried a different distributor, changed the pvc valve, becasue they were all in the area. so for 2 years now I had this nasty sound, and it was only at between 2500-3000rpm, basically at idle when it was cold and when driving. So I'm so stumped so I took my valve cover off for the 20th time and looked around and I touched my timing belt and it was loose, so I loosened the tensioner, and hooked up a clothes hanger to it and pulled up hard as **** and tightened the tensioner bolt. And bam no more noise its quiet as hell. I was so happy. The reason i had to pull up on the tensioner is becasue I did it the way the helms book said but it wasn't getting tight enough. So check that, basically when I touched my timing belt it was sliding on the cam gears, after i tightended it, it was nice and tight

Why does someone have to second this. I did a seach on ticking sounds once and a loose timing belt was brought up once before. So don't waste time, its very simple, take off your valve cover and put your fingers on the Timing belt and try and move it. It should be kinda tight, it shouldn't slide left to right. It just might be your problem, because the way you described the sound and when it occurs, its exactly the same as mine.

I 2nd that you should check and see if your timing belt is tight enough, since it only takes a second, and can cause worse problems than ticking if it is too loose. He was probably hearing the belt tap the valve cover between the cam gears.
