is there any specific side of a new head gasket that must go on the head when installing it?
does it matter what side touches the block and what side touches the head when putting another head gasket on?

sure does
the coolant holes should only line up 1 way, but you have to look closely. if its an oem head gasket, there is a number stamp on the left front side
