Um - you have to crack the tranny to put in any final drive. You could use the 98 spec ITR 4.785 FD if you want that..

Remember that one requires an ITR or GSR diff.

openning up a tranny is ok. aslong as you have all the tools and a shop manual to put it back together. you also have to lay out the gears in order. good luck!

i have driven the following
b16 with ls tranny.....TURD....a big SLOW ONE
b16 with 4.4 final (us tranny) fun.....
b16 with 4.785 final drive installed on a US b16 tranny.....hey this little thing is a blast!!
b16 with 4.9 ATS final drive.....holy crap....how fast did i just go through first through forth?
a 4.9 final will dramatically increase the driving pleasure of a b16!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Chad!
I have no doubt that the ATS would be very fun. But this is my daily driver and I do a lot of highway driving. I don't know if my girlfriend nor I could stand going 80 on the freeway for very long with a 4.929.
Is there a 4.7 that will bolt up to a US Tranny without extra parts? I don't mind spending $750 on the ATS, but would prefer 4.7.

I have been told by several people that a 4.78 FD WILL NOT fit in the B16A tranny casing UNLESS it has been shaved to put it in. If this is true or not I do not know. But that is what several shops have told me and also what I have read on the INTERNET. I DO NOT HAVE FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE on wether or not this is true.

You are correct. It doesn't bolt right in. I just got my car back on the road using a 99Si tranny and a 4.78 final drive. You need to use a GSR or TypeR diff, in order to make it work. As far as the difference in cruising speed. My RPM's are only about 200 clicks higher than before, so it's not bad at all.
