Default test pipe vs. hi flow cat

I have a six gen with the basics (listed below). I am interested in getting either a hi flow cat or test pipe. however i want my engine light to stay off does anyone with experience have input that would help?

You could convert to OBDI which would eliminate the secondary O2 sensor. I'm not sure how other guys running OBDII get away with the secondary O2 and a test pipe.

The cat works just as fine, and it's legal.

The horsepower gain with the test pipe is minimal. Personally, I would prefer to lose 1-2 hp while not polluting the atmosphere as much.

Like someone said, if you have the money, buy the cat.

if you run open header at the track with a CEL for not having the 02 sensor on the cat plugged in, will it hurt performace(being that you are throwing a CEL)?

^^^ What he said^^^ plus, a high-flow cat will often give you more power than a test pipe. Go figure...

Open header will rob you of the little low-end you have.

Yes, but what will it do for the top end?

thousands of dollars in fines if you get caught running a testpipe on the street... it will make your exhaust smell like *** so a cop will know if you get pulled over, plus the chemicals will damage the finish on your back bumper = not worth it

get the cat. runnin pipe like someone said b4 smells like ****. (cops no like smelly loud cars) i tried a bunch of stuff but you will still get an engine light for emissions. running a pipe also made my car well over the 95 decible requirement for california law, so i had to run my **** in 5th gear when im on the streets trying to cruse by cops.

My carsound cat crapped out after only 7months. If you get a GREAT deal on a high flow cat...get it. I'm gonna gut mine.

And open header works great when racing.

If you run a test pipe make sure it's the same diameter as your piping. Gutting a cat creates a open chamber which slows the exhaust flow. I am running a test pipe since I went from a close coupled VX cat to a b16 and Greddy exhaust. Car is still very quite, doesn't smell except on startup, and being from KY I still am running 10 times cleaner than the 1976 Chevy pickups running open headers getting 5mpg.

Well right now...I just wanna get rid of the insane rattling from the cat. A little I can tolerate...but now it's just too loud...people think I'm draggin metal underneath the car. Whether or not it'll flow well doens't matter to me because my street setup is not for power anymore...just keeps the noise down. When I race...the cutout is uncapped for open header.

The gutted cat would help keep the legal look from the outside also

yes listen to this man if you gut your cat get a pipe put in the middle so you don't get this open chamber effect, but i agree with delsolguy...keep it mostly legal

NO CEL. This is how my brother's setup on his '98 HX went. DC header for EX, Powercore resonated test pipe, Greddy SP catback for EX. On the secondary O2 sensor, he put some aluminum foil over the sensor's probe and screwed it back into the test pipe. The CEL remains off and functions normally.

i am 100% positive it is over a thousand$ in cali and other states are extreme too. i dont know about new york and some southern states dont even have emmisions so it doesnt matter anyway. let me rephrase then,,, check local laws and fines before you decide to run a testpipe. and hope you dont get caught.

My sentiments exactly...even though I can't run a test pipe here anyway I think it's stupid to make your exhaust obnoxiously loud and more heavily polluted.
