Tell me which SOHC Head I have....Y8 or Z6?
I am completely stumped. I thought I had a Z6 head but when I looked at it, it seemed to me it was a Y8.
I got my comparison from here:
http://pub143.ezboard.com/fhon...topic
Now, here are pictures of my head. I want to point out that the combustion chamber have been opened up to match the 78mm bore. THis is going on my big boost SOHC project.
Please note that it says P08-2 on it with some numbers. I assume these numbers are when it was made or something? There is also a serial number. How do find out what year it came from? What signifies a Y8 and Z6 head stamping code?
If the head I have is a Y8, do I need Y8 ARP headstud? Y8 Zex Cam? Y8 Cam Gear?
Here are some pictures from the link above:
Thanks in advance.

your intake ports look the same as the z6, althought the combustion chambers are different... i'd say z6 from looking at the pictures and holes around the comb chambers
the combustion chambers are definitely different than the z6 though... im kinda stumped but would lean twoards the z6

It looks to me that you have a Z6 head based on those pictures.
If you look at the top picture and try to match it with one from the second picture, you can see that your head looks like the Z6 head. You can tell because of those holes that surround the combustion chamber. Look at the holes above the far left chamber, the Z6 head has two small holes while the Y8 head has a small one and a longer one.

its deffinetely a z6 head if you look in the second picture about...the cross hatch pattern molded into the metal resemble the z6's patter (how they are centered) unlike the y8 which stretch across the whole head

everyone has given great points, and it really is difficult to tell.

I want to make sure everyone understands that the combustion chambers have been opened up A LOT. The block is a 78mm block so these have been opened up that far.
I am also thinking this is a z6/D15 head but I wanted to make sure. I assume I use my Z6 cam gear, 59300 big Zex Cam, and Z6 ARP head studs (all of which I have)?
To me the combustion chambers don't look like aZ6 but everything else including the code do. Is the JDM head any good or no? Same thing as the Z6?
Also, if you dudes know of more "SOHC Guru's" please send this to them or let me know and I'll PM them.
Thanks.

Thats a Z6 head. Follow the heads outer contour and you will notice the Y8 has a tab that sticks out in the upper right hand corner of the picture which is not present in the photo of your head. Also, there should be a production date stamped on the head which should solve the mystery.

its a y8 head but will work so whats the big deal you seem to have all the info to work on the head go to town

If its a Y8, then why does it have a P08 code on it?
It makes a huge difference as to what cam, head studs, cam gear I need to use. Everything I have is for a Z6. Obviously you aren't getting the point here.
Another person noted that since this head was completely done up, the combustion chambers might have been welded. Anyone have pics of the JDM D15b head?

Ladysman, it's definately a Z6 head, the PO8 head code is the giveaway. Also note the 4 holes to the right of the intake ports where the VTEC solenoid goes. It's different between the Y8 and Z6 and the crosshatch pattern along the bottom of the head also more closely resembles a Z6.

D-man just told me it was a Z6 with the chambers welded.

I have a skunk2 cam for a Z6 head in my y8 head. You just have to adjust the timing accordingly.

Well, it is a Z6 head for sure. Look familiar? Thanks to D-Man
This head was ported by JG and the chamber is welded. Go here for more.

What does the welding of the chamber do?

Adjust it to what? Guideline for someone else.

anytime
only advantage to welding up the chambers that I could see is you can build more compression with a flat-top piston instead of going with a domed piston to build it.

Yeah, thanks again. It is a flat top piston. As a matter of fact, here is the block. ~9.5:1 Wiseco's. Even if mine ends up being in the 10's for compression, this will spool the turbo better.

You can tell the year by looking at the stamp near the exhaust port on the far right side of the block (#4 chamber).
