Swapping my d16z6 for a d16y8?
Hey there. So I have a 95 civic ex (Canada Si) with a stock d16z6. My engine is pretty much toast and I want to replace it with another. But I can't find any D16z6 locally, but I found a few D16Y8s.
My question is if these will be a simple swap in. I know mounts and transmission should work with it but the OBD system is different. I searched but all the threads are people going from a Y8 to a Z6. Also wondering why people do that, me doing the opposite worries me.
Can anybody help me out with this?
Thanks

You'll be fine just swap injectors and engine harnesses. Maby intake manifold. Also the y8 will have a crank sensor but don't worry about it as the p28 won't recognize it anyway.

Reuse your engine harness along with your injectors and alternator. For ease of swap you could just swap over intake and exhaust manifolds. If you choose to use the Y8 intake manifold you'll have to use the Y8 fuel rail or modify your Z6 to fit. Also the Y8 manifold doesn't have a place for the IAT sensor so you'll need to place it into your intake arm somewhere. You'll need a distributor from a 92-95 d series engine other than the Z6 for perfect bolt up as the Z6 has a different mounting configuration. Or if your Y8 comes with one just swap out internals from your Z6 for plug and play. Like it was said above you'll have an extra plug near the crank for the CKF and the knock sensor on the back of the block won't be used with the P28 either. Sounds like a lot but its pretty straightforward otherwise.

The only other thing no one mentioned is there are timing differences between the Z6 and Y8 that pretty much require a chip and a tune to run right. OP have you thought about a JDM SOHC ZC? It's basically the Same as a Z6, you can get one from any importer for about $800 complete with low mileage.

yea i looked at the jdm zc's, but they are more than getting the y8's. I thought the Y8 swap would be easier than it is so I might just go zc if I cant find a z6. Thanks for the help guys!

I'd rather have a Y8. If the Y8 is manual, you'll need to swap only the injectors and wiring harness. If it's automatic, you'll need the Z6 intake manifold.
The Y8 has a nicer intake manifold, and higher compression than the Z6 or JDM D15B.
