Default Stupid question about oil changes on my car...

This is a deff. nOOb question, but I just want to make sure because I dont want to mess anything up. When changing my oil, no oil is put in the vtec solenoid right? I heard somebody talking about this, and then it made me wonder, possibly stupid I know, but I just want to make sure. And about an oil filter, I can go to any auto parts store and say i need a filter for a 00 civic dohc right? Is any special filter required for a vtec car? The salesman I bought the car from said to bring the car in for oil changes because it required a "special filter". I have a hard time believing any of this, but Id rather sound stupid, then have my car f***** up within a couple months of owning it. Thanks for any replies.

What about using 10w30 oil. Is this a bad idea? I figured it would be better because it's a heavier oil.

5w30 is fine for your motor. if you turbo it, then you can run a heavier oil. the thicker oil can actually restrict your motors performance.
