In my experience, it made enough of a difference to make me keep the bar on, but not enough of a difference to purchase one again. Then again, they can be a $20 upgrade, or a $200 upgrade depending on the type. You'll have more benefit from sway bars, the bars that go below the car, than upper strut bars. You may want to see about doing those first and then getting a strut bar in the front and rear, or find a package deal of all sway bars and all strut bars.

Brand and such depends on you of course. In for suggestions!

ive got the neuspeed front upper right now and it was like night and day compared to not having it there. I guess it's a preference from what ive been reading.

If have a hinged strut bar on my ride, but it really doesn't do anything except look cool and shiny...

'88-'00 Honda CiViCs have twisted double-wishbone suspensions, just like the Bugatti EB16.4, McLaren F1, and Ferrari F50 - and they don't flex all that much anyway!

Your best shot at actually making a difference is to use a Neuspeed tie-bar, like the guy above:

Personally, I think strut bars *look* great, but they do jack - not on '88-'00 CiViCs!

They do work but its not the first thing I would do. You should get good tires first, then match your dampers, sway bars and spring rates to the use that the car gets. For street use 1-2" of lowering is usually acceptable and moderate spring rates with adjustable rebound shocks/coilovers. A larger rear sway bar and brace helps too.

'01-up Honda CiViCs are CiViCs in name only. They're actually Global Compact Platform cars now - and use crappy Mcpherson struts, which need all the help they can get...
