Steering wheel shaking and wheels making noise?
I have a 2000 civic lx automatic. When I'm cruising down the road i hear a noise like my wheel hub bearing is bad. But when I get up to around 75-85 on the interstate, the steering wheel shakes over and over. Its not a constant shaking it lasts for about half a second every 1.5 seconds(shake...shake....shake...shake). It actually shakes the whole car a bit. I've realized that its worse when my steering wheel is to the right, more than if its to the left. When I brake from any speed higher than 35, my car shakes as well.
Is it just a bad bearing or something more serious?
I cant tell where the noise is coming from(left or right wheel).
Anything helps

All of my lug nuts are fully tightened up.
It sounds like a wheel hub bearing but i checked and they seem to be fine.

Re: Steering wheel shaking and wheels making noise?
I just swapped out the struts and they are all fine.
It got alot worse today, now it happens at 65+ mph.
Its not really a shaking but more like a bunch of fast wobbles.
It really feels like my wheel is going to fall off, but The lug nuts are fully tightened.
The thing that is really weird is the fact that it isnt a constant shake.
Its in pulses, which I cant understand.
Anything else that I should check?

make sure you tires are good, usually when steering shake @ high speed, and it's balancing issues. But you also press on the brakes and it shakes that is a brake issues.
Do you smell something like burn metal?

Re: Steering wheel shaking and wheels making noise?
I dont smell any burnt metal. My brakes makes noise too and shake when I stop, but I think that is due to the missing screws that hold the rotor on. I'm replacing them today.
Also, how would I go about checking the axles? Do I have to take them out and inspect them, or is there another way
Thanks for the help

Does the brake pedal pulsate when you're on the brakes? If so, you have warped rotors which would be the culprit.

rotors are hella difficult to warp. but if they did pulsate, i would say it would be a good possibility. i had vibration when i would brake. just needed to resurface the rotors. that fixed my issue. go easy stuff first. balancing?

Re: Steering wheel shaking and wheels making noise?
Its a constant vibration when i brake. But I think thats from the 2 screws that hold the rotor on(they are gone).
I was gonna buy new tie rod ends tomorrow.
Is there an easy way to check them to make sure they are bad?

2 little screw would not make a difference, perhaps you need alignment.

Those screws don't hold it on. If your lugnuts are tight the rotor isn't going to move at all.
Jack the car up, shake the wheels side to side, up and down, and diagonally. Any movement, looseness?
It's not very hard to warp rotors, and if they are warped, new ones are about $25 at advance auto. No need to pay $20 to resurface your old ones

Is it a little shake, or more of a jerking motion. Mines used to jerk hella crazy to the right, ended up being my passenger side axle.

screw wont do much, my sister had this problem and her tires were gone! when she got new ones the shaking completely stopped, now if its jerking i would say its an axel i had to replace mine not very hard..

Re: Steering wheel shaking and wheels making noise?
Those three things are the most likely causes. Warped brake rotors another possibility. However in my experience you only feel the pulsing from warped rotors while braking, but no vibration at all while not using the brakes.
