My speedometer in my 96 Civic has been intermittent for about 4 years. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Overall I'd say it works 30% of the time. I've never seen my check engine light on since the speedometer quit working correctly. Not sure if the check engine light has any correlation with your speedo not working.

I believe a non functional speedo (meaning no signal) triggers a check engine light after a certain speed is reached/exceeded. Can't say for certain BUT instead of speculating why don't you just see what the check engine light is for?

Maybe the speed sensor is bad? it happened to me on my 98 civic coupe. I had to replace the sensor, then it worked fine.

Tech threads MUST mention car and engine information.

Pull the CEL code and post it. Click the codes link in my signature.

It's on the back of the transmission above the differential area. It should be the only thing with an electrical connection on the back side of the transmission.

Buy one off eBay (speed sensor) to save a crap load of money. Their over $100 in part stores. It's where He said^^^^, reading the output shaft rotation and converting it to pulses for speedo, cruise etc.. They go bad alot. I have changed 3 in 5 of my Hondas.
The sensor has three wires (red, blueyellow).
