Default Speedo bouncing or not working

My speedo in my 93 civic ex is not working most of the time and bouces around rarely. I have a CEL for a VSS but already swapped that and still the same issue. The VSS also tests out properly. And my Vtec isnt kicking in
Oh and the car has an LS/vtec w/ a GSR trans.
Already searched too...
My question is could the cluster being bad throw a CEL for a VSS ?
Please help or give me some other ideas.
thanks

it might be possible, but unlikely. The Ecu checks to see whether or not the vss is there. If your VSS dies it might not nessicarily throw a check engine light. Sounds like you missed something simple like improper installation of the vss or plug isn't tight enough. I've had some stupid moments too.

The VSS CEL code likely prevents VTEC from engaging.

Is fuse 24 under the dash blown?

Was the VSS installed correctly?

its defanatly installed right and the connection is good. i tested the wires out of the vss and also by the throttle body before it goes under the supercharger. is there any way to test at the ECU or Cluster even by the firewall. also the CEL doesnt come on untill i drive for about 5 minutes. thanks for the input

Yeah, a bad speedometer would not throw a VSS CEL code.

If the connectors and wires between the VSS and ECU are fine (see tests in service manual), then it is possible that the ECU is bad; however, the bouncing speedo suggests that the problem lies with the VSS or its connector/wires.

There is a good chance the 3-Pin connector is toast. Get a new one, or one from a wrecker, and get it in there.

Very cheap to do so if it dosen't work, not much lost.

So i tried a new cluster and a new ecu and still the same issue.
if the connector was bad it would give the proper voltage right?
i am starting to belive there may be a wiring issue somewhere else in the car. is there any where else to test this VSS wire, like at the ECU. if so does anyone no the color?
thanks again

I got another VSS and still nothing. So now i have tried everything i just found a new 3 pin connector. Im going to hook this up today.
I had my train of thought wrong and thought the VSS would send out 4.5 volts but the power is actually being sent to it. ( so i was wrong when i thgouht the connector was good) So i pulled the VSS out and left it hooked up. probed the signal wire and spun the gear but it didnt fluctuate between 0-5V. It HAS to be the connector ( i hope)
So does anyone know the pin positions on the connector just so i can be positive its hooked up right? the colors on the one i got are different then the old ones. I would just follow the way it was hooked up but i want to be positive its right..
thanks

your suppose to jack up the front to wheels and spin the drivers tire inorder to get a 0-12V reading from the VSS. thats how you know if its working

its getting all the proper voltage. but not changing from 0-5V
as far as the spinning of the wheels, i could see doing that if the vss was testing right and to check to see if the diff was spinning the sensor but me spinning the gear and the diff spinning it is basicly the same thing

DUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!! check to see if the drive pin is rounded off!!!!! it may be neccesary to purchase one to see the difference ... i havent seen yet where you mentioned it was checked... this is typical when the vss goes bad and it seizes internally causing the pin to round out..

well the 3 different VSS's i have tried was the hole long unit with the gear at the bottom. im not takin just the 2 bolts out and switchin the top peice. That is a good idea tho but i doubt 3 are all rounded off. the latest VSS i got was out of a car that was working fine and thats in my car now.
my main queston now is where the position of the wires go. Like when your looking at the sensor from the back with the clip down. where should ground/ 12V and signal go?

are the three wire colors yel/blu, yel/wht, and black?? if so black is ground, yel/blu is bat +, and yel/white is signal.

I had the same problem, the actual VSS plug was rotting I got a new plug with no rust or corrosion and it fixed the problem. Try a new plug you can find them anywhere.

About your speedometer bouncing / not working. I am having the same problem, with mine. it's not my cluster so I was thinking it's my speed sensor. I'll probably take it out and see whats up just haven't had the time.
