DOHC has a noticable vtec crossover whereas the SOHC is a little hard to hear, but its there. also DOHC sound much better IMHO

"about to" meaning you already have the engine? Why not just do a mini-me swap?

On my brother's stock GSR you can sort of hear the crossover, and on my friends b20/vtec its really apparant. On my friends EX I can hardly notice it. I think it depends on if you have an exhaust/intake which would probally amplify the sound. Overall I'd say that DOHC VTEC is 'louder' than SOHC VTEC.

My SOHC will beat a B16 swap no problem. It's kinda hard to hear VTEC engaging with Tanabe RM exhaust, but I do a hear a pssssssshhhhhhhh when shifting.

short ram intake really helps amplify the sound on SOHC VTEC's. when i put the cold air extension on, it's really hard to hear it. at 5K, i notice a change in engine noise and it pulls slightly harder. it's similar to the DOHC VTEC IMO.

SOHC vtec sounds fine. You can def. hear the VTEC cross over either completely stock or with a normal short ram and quiet exhaust. But u lose the sound with a louder exhaust.

DOHC vtec crossover can be heard regardless. And only gets more prominent with the addition intake, cams, header, etc.

IMHO, the dohc is louder than a sohc...obviously the dual cam is louder..with my ex, u CAN hear the changeover but isnt so drastic..i have a short ram and apexi WS and i can hear vtec louder than my WS...imo, if u wanna have a "LOUDER" vtec, just get cams or a dohc swap

The sound of vtec on a single cam will be heard best with a short ram intake and quiet exhaust for one reason. The vtec on a single cam is on the intake side and not the exhaust. My vtec is not as noticable as it was when I had a short ram intake with stock exhaust. I added a N1 muffler and it wasn't as loud but still noticable. I added a header and N1 catback and the car was a lot louder but vtec was a little hard to determine. At first it was petty hard figuring out whether vtec was engaging, but now I can tell the difference. I also added a test pipe high flow cat and it got even louder when vtec crossover came.

The only thing about it getting louder is that it doesn't scream like DOHC VTEC. It kind sounds more like an LS motor, but if you know your car then it so what. My combo that I put together was AEM CAI, N1 catback exhaust, test pipe, and HP Racing Header(ceramic 4-2-1), really satisfies me and I have no complaints about the switchover.

I really agree with the H and B series guy who quote day after day that DOHC VTEC is a lot more agressive stock for stock than with a SOHC VTEC. This is just my opinion, but you have a lot more opinions to choose from. Two cams for vtec is a lot better than one. I've owned both and I can honestly say that the DOHC won in every class against the SOHC. My gsr was a great car and I would love to get it back.

I have the d16z6 in my car right now, and after riding in my friend from work's GSR, I can safely say that my intake sound is much louder than his. He has a AEM CAI, and I have an Injen short ram. A few stupid friends of mine asked "do you have a turbo" because the "sucking" noise was so loud, specially on the passenger side (because that's the intake side). My friend's GSR however was much faster, but not as agressive sounding on the intake.

My Ex makes noise when it hits VTEC, my friends Type R screams when it hits VTEC. Major difference.

My JDM 2nd gen B16A with CTR cams and ITR valvetrain scares the **** out of people when I hit vtec right beside them LOL. You should see the look on there faces. I have to admit it's really damn loud even inside the car.

yeah i can notice the different sounds from sohc and dohc.the dohc just sound hella meaner, i have d16z6 in my 94 cx with aem short ram and rs*r exhaust, i easily can here when vtec kicks in, when i was in my friends 1998 ex i couldn't even hear vtec or feel a kick from it at all. and he had cai, and no exhaust. But when i rode in my friends 89 si hatch with b16a2 with greddy exhaust and greddy hearder and injen short ram intake his sounds a lot nicer and u get a bigger kick from it, also in my friends 94 dx with b18c1 aem cai and apex n1 exhaust just like my friends b16a2 sounded so nice, and a big kick.
