Default SOHC VTEC Crossover...

Was driving my car (D16Z6 w/ auto) up a hill and I noticed that around 4800 rpm the engine sounds like (i'm guessing) VTEC is crossingover, but I thought it crossed at a higher rpm. Does anyone happen to know exactly when it crosses over? By the way it's a 93 Del Sol Si with everything stock except the cam, if it helps.

Flood protection is enabled on this site. You are only allowed to post every 30 seconds. Try again in 1 seconds.

I think about 5500 RPMs. Maybe 58.

So does anyone know why I'm hearing something at 4800 and not 5500/5800? I'm not driving with my A/C on and I'm not giving it more gas at 4800...what could it be? Is there anyway to test VTEC?

U could get one of those VTEC lights, but it should kick in at 5500.

Could having the timing advanced/retarded have anything to so with this? The only reason I ask is because sometimes when I have my timing advanced, the engine is cold, and I'm nailing it, it doesn't want to change gears (auto) until I let off the gas a little.

On the 93 D16's (D16Z6) I think the VTEC comes on at 4800 rpm. But mine a D16Y8 it sounds like it goes into VTEC at 5500 rpm and it's impossible for me to keep it in VTEC when shifting hard. But if someone knows for sure correct me...

And anytime an auto engine is cold it will have trouble changing gears.

Um well I don't have any upgrades as far as my exhaust system goes so I'm not getting all the power I could be getting. But not to say there is no improvement. At the track my time went from a crappy 18.1 to a still-slow 17.2 and as far as top end goes, well it has a better power curve and alot more torque. I used to not be able to break 100 in over-drive (auto), but now it has no problem getting to 120.

Z6 VTEC crossover is between 4800 and 5200 rpm depending on throttle position.

It's 4800 on the D16Z6

I dissagree...my VTEC indicator comes on at 4800 no matter what's happening. I used to think it depended on engine load and things like that but it's always the same.

My God this subject has been covered so many times. The reason most can never decide on when the VTEC engages is because with our SOHC engines, its hardly noticed.
I know for a fact that the later model EX's(d16y8) have the crossover at 4800. Anything before that, I have no clue.

Ok this page: http://members.aol.com/josh3030/specifications.html clears the air a little showing the GSR and Type-R OEM VTEC points.

This one I found: http://users.twave.net/civicsi/technica.htm shows the B16A2 in the 99-00 Si and the 96-00EX VTEC. I have a hard time believing it, but it says it is 4500rpm for the D16Y8. Hmmmm.........

I'm sure you moved it up like me since you're turbo, right?

i have a '93 EX and ima have to go wtih VTEC being engaged at 4800 to 5200 depending on throttle position, u forget people that it engages off of oil pressure. your engine must be at normal operating temp (if it's cold, won't turn on), and make sure u have ENOUGH oil for pressure to build up so it crosses over
just a lil advise

maxim, the turbo is not quite on yet so I have been adjusting it from 4500-5500 to see what I like best. I do plan to have it set about 1500rpm higher than the point I reach max boost. I guesstimate that to be around 5000rpms, maybe less. From what I understand from MatT3T4, as long as VTEC comes on after max boost the motor will be happy. BTW, what do you have your VTEC set to right now?
