Simple question about Automatic interchange

I have a 1998 Civic D16Y8 VTEC
needs a transmission. 96-2000 are the same part numbers but NON-Vtec is not the same.
Can I use a non-vtec automatic or must it be vtec to make the computer happy.

Just get an EX AT from a junkyard 2 or 4 door is the same part.
