Default si cluster problem PLEASE HELP

ok i bought my si cluster for my 98 ek hatch and it had about 9k on it when installed. It worked fine all the way up till now. I have about 11k on it and the speedometer flickers. I just turned my blinker on and heard like a little pop then the speedometer started jumping. Around 35-40 mph it starts and just gets worse from there jumping vigerously. It works fine when im going about 30mph and slowing down. Im going to check the fuses tomarrow and the back of the cluster. Does anyone have advice??????

unless you have a Check Engine Light, its most likely a bad Speedometer head. (the actually speedometer guage)

I have had the check engine light on for a while but i know whats causing that. New prognosis, i was driving it tonight and now the speedometer doesnt work at all and the guage cluster flashes from dim to bright and its in sequence with headlights. it makes no sense to me???? then once in a while the speedometer will go up and when it does my car seems to accelerate a little more. Does anyone know wha i can do besides buy a new speedometer?

So you swapped in a guage cluster other than what came in it stock? Id put the stock one back in and see what it does if anything. If it fixes it, you know your problem lies in that new guage cluster at the very least.

I doubt it is the cluster since it's flickering and "popping". Pull the cluster and check the coil and for shorts.

could the "pop" have been a fuse blowing?

Could be the sensor that reads the RPM's on your car might be dead.

It could be a couple of things.
1. you could have a bad vss (vehicle speed sensor)
2. make sure the 4 screws that hold the speedo in the cluster are tight.
3. check your plugs on the back of the cluster. If one is not making a good connection and you are bouncing around the conection could be made for a moment. That would cause you speedo to jump irradicaly.
Check these things and get back to us.

ok i put the old cluster in and it did the same thing as the si cluster did so im thinking that its the VSS or the ECU since it goes to the ECU after the VSS so does anyone know of someone who has fixed this problem b4?

Just replace the vss. It sounds like your problem. You dont ever hear of an ecu going bad and just causing the speedo to jump. If it was the ecu you would be having more than just one problem.

it could be your Vehicle Speed Sensor located at the back of your tranny. Jumping speedo needle is a symptom that your speed sensor is about to go out....

Half hour at the most. It's two bolts on the tranny and a electrical plug. When you go to put the new one in, make sure you take your time lining up the gears. You don't wan't to screw the gears up.

also check the plug on the engine harness to make sure there is no corrosion causing a lack of electrical connection. I have had that happen b4.
