should be an easy question.
i have a D16Y8 engine and like all d16y8 engines it has V-tech.
how do i know when the v-tech kicks in.
does it make a sound?
and what RPM should it kick in?

Something like 3800 rpm IIRC.

Re: should be an easy question. (mcvtec)
It engages at 4800 RPM.
There's a few reqs for it. Your water temp has to be around standard operating temperature, you must be going above a certain MPH (can't hit VTEC at a stand-still), and must have significant oil pressure. Also, I'm pretty sure you can't hit it in neutral.
Now when I say it "engages" at 4800, that's an estimate. The computer decides the exact engagement point, but fully warmed up and running under full throttle it will engage under 4800. It'll engage later if you're only giving it half throttle.
EDIT:
You usually won't know when VTEC kicks in. On a Y8 the VTEC lobes aren't aggressive enough over the low RPM ones to make a sudden "jerk" - like most people expect. You'll usually hear a pitch change around about 5k though if you have a loud exhaust. The exhaust note will get more double edged than usual. With a stock exhaust you can barely hear it, and most who "hear it" don't actually hear it, just think they hear it. On a D16 it's hard to tell the difference between what's the engine going into the power band, and what's VTEC engaging.

I think you missed the point... VTEC > VTECH
