Short Ram air intake doesn't decrease MPG right?
Looks like some people want to come and show everyone what they learned in school. Increase horsepower? Increase MPG? Not enough to really matter.
Pay somebody reputable to tune the car. If you're going that route, a wideband oxygen sensor and some sort of display for it are (in my opinion) just about a necessity.

It will change your horsepower/torque vs. rpm curve. It will typically be engineered to give a better high rpm torque, and it will sacrifice low end torque and probably the midrange too. When I bought my AEM, the website showed before and after torque and horsepower curves. After installation, I have appreciably less acceleration and power until I get above 4000 rpm and then a big difference all the way to 7000. It sounds great and is a lot more fun to drive fast, But I was a little disappointed in the loss of low end torque.
Also I get about 2mpg less on the highway(from 34mpg to 32), and about the same loss on city driving, from 28-26mpg. I've had it on for 5 years now. And I have only cleaned it once so far, and it doesn't seem to make any difference clean or dirty! And that's been over 76,000 miles of driving.
Airliners/jets fly at higher altitudes because the air is less dense, creates less drag for the same airspeed, get higher true airspeeds, and jet engines are more thermally efficient with colder inlet air temps. For every thousand feet above sea level, the air temperature drops 2 degrees C until you reach the tropopause around 37000 feet, and then the temp doesn't change much until you get way higher.
At sea level where most of us drive,colder moist air will use more fuel. If you live where the seasons change you probably already have noticed you get a little less mpg in the winter. More air mass thru your intake will draw more fuel whether you have an ECU managed fuel injection or a carburetor. Putting more fuel thru the engine generally gives more power.
All that being said, remember that the engineers at honda are trying to get the best combination of performance, economy, emissions, and noise. The designers of your CAI have their own parameters.

I run the AEM v2 short ram on my EP3 which was desinged to speed up n cool the air before it hit the engine n i must say i havent seen much of a diference + or - on the MPG between the OEM and the v2. but on hp got 2.6 out of it. best $300 3 hp item i ever bought. but if u really want hp just add alot of stickers
