shifting hard in an automatic
hey guys- maybe u can help me with this problem. i have a 94 del Sol with an automatic transmission. it's been shifting hard as hell for the last month. i had the transmission fluid flushed and replaced and it's still shifting hard. do you guys think i should have my tranny rebuilt? how much would that cost?

yeah, in my experience with automatics....that is a pretty good sign that it is on its way out. I have no idea on rebuild cost though.

Re: shifting hard in an automatic (DragIIcivic)
thanks for the fast reply DragIIcivic. any idea how hard it would be to maybe buy a used tranny and swap that in?

it would definately be an all day, possibly weekend job. the only problem is. with a used tranny, you never know exactly what you're gonna get. if you are not familiar with working on cars, you might be over your head on a tranny swap though.

A good person should beable to pull the old one out and the new one in in about 4hrs give or take about 30 min. and then drive away.

with the right tools, and knowhow...yes you are absolutely right, but a shade tree mechanic might take 4 hours trying to remove the driveaxles

Trust me, stranger things have happened.
by the time I asses the situation, and get started on the case of beer, I have killed 2 hours already

Re: shifting hard in an automatic (DragIIcivic)
well i took my car to my mechanic and he test drove it. he said the hard shifting is somewhat normal for Honda compact cars. especially with 90K miles and it being a 1994. i asked him about replacing my transmission and he said it might help, but that i shouldn't worry about anything. think he's tellign me the truth?

i know a guy has a automatic civic, had the same problem you were having...
he got the tranny rebuilt and it is now fine... i dont know how much he paid tho...
i got my tranny (5spd) rebuilt with new bearings + clutch...
labour was 8hrs (taking it apart + rebuilding)...and came up to around $1100 cdn
all together... (juss to give you an idea of how much 5spd tranny's costs to rebuild) hope this helps
