Default Rusting fenders. How 2 fix?

I bought some Z3 style fenders last year for my '00 Civic DX. I bought them on e-bay, so don't know what brand they are, but they where advertised as "aluminum" and they had the plastic inserts. Shortly after I bought them I lost my job and therefore did have the flow to get them painted. The whole front of my car is black (Tsunami polyurethane bumper cover, CFH, APC projector lights, Z3 fenders). Anyway, I didn't think much of not getting it all painted, other than it looks funny, because I figured the aluminum wouldn't rust. Turns out my fenders have a bit of rust showing up. I guess they are an aluminum compound of some sort.

My question: Can I still get them painted without the rust coming through? What will I have to do before painting them? Sand them down?

If its rust coming through youd have to sand them down and use some kind of body filler. The problem is that fender did not have the right primer, it has shipping primer on it so it wont scratch. If it has rust spots on it you will have to sand that area down. Just get those fenders primered ASAP.

thanks for the tip. Unfortunately it is more than just a few rust spots. It is more like rust areas. I think I'm just going to take the fenders off and put the stock ones back on, and try and salvage the rusted ones using your advice. thanks again.

that's probobly your best option.

Get rid of the Z3, put on the stock ones and oil guard your car

you'll have to forgive my ignorance, as I just moved up here from FL and am not used to snow and having crap all over the roads that rusts your car. Is oil guarding exactly what it sounds like....rubbing oil on the surface of the paint?

get out some 180 grit sand paper, and sand all teh rust spots till only mettal is showing, then sand with 240 grit. then get high built primer, very usefull for filling in the scratched your going to make with the sand paper. then after spraying on a few coats so all of your scratches can be sanded out. use 400 gril, then 800, then 2000 and u can paint it and all your rust will be gone.
