Default Running 0w-40 Synthetic Oil in a D16Y8 ?

Hey everyone,

Now that I'm married, I am now in charge of maintaing my wife's '97 1.6EL.

It's got 90,000KM on it and has had dealer maintance its whole life. I would like to start it on synthetic oil, and was hoping that it would be okay to use Synthetic 0w-40 oil in it? I want this 0w-40 especially for the winters, where it can get to -30C in the morning, and you need to start your car which is parked outside, without starving it for oil

What do you guys think, good idea over the conventional 5w-30 these cars call for?

I think it's a waste of money.

A.) the car doesn't need synthetic oil ever. EVER. These engines will run for 3000 miles at a time on Crisco if that's all you got. At 90k kilometers, I'd suggest a semi-synthetic at best. It's just not worth the extra money in the long run. Conventional dinojuice changed every 3000 miles will be better for the car than synthetic changed every 7500.

B.) the car won't starve for oil on cold starts, even at minus 30.

C.) if you're seriously concerned about the possibility of doing damage in the Winter, I would suggest a 0 w 30 conventional oil, but nothing more expensive than that. I would also suggest changing back to 5 or 10 w 30 as soon as you feel the weather permits, as oil that thin (regardless of what people tell you) does not protect as well as heavier stuff.

By the way, I work for Valvoline and do this kind of thing every day. I'm not saying I'm the only one with insight, but I do know a thing or two about keeping a car running. My d16z6 (northern Ohio) has 257k+ (that's miles, you silly Cannuk ) on it and I run it on conventional or maxlife oil every 3000 miles.

Cheers.

You said you work for Valvoline... I have a question...

My friend bought a used car and the previous owner was using Valvoline MaxLife 10w40

My friend switched to Mobil1 10w40 and his car immediately started burning oil... when MaxLife was used it would burn 0.5qt in 3000 miles and after switchover it burns like 1 quart in 1000 miles... and that is not the only problem... after 2 oil changes, his front andrear main seal was shot almost causing engine seizure... luckily he turned the car off imediately so no damage was done...

Could that switching oil cause those things to happen? Maybe if MaxLife builds some kind of shield and that shield is "washed off" with another not-maxlife oil, it can cause some problems...

What do you think???

He switched back to MaxLife and he is burning 1 quart in 3000 miles and seems to have no problems but he disconnected the hose that is going from the valve cover back into intake/throttle body... when that hose was connected, his oil dipstick was pushed out of the dipstick-hole every once in a while... like there is some kind of preasure building inside the oil pan...

Please help...
