REVERSE mini-me, which blocks can I use?
Hello!!!
car is a 98 civic ex
My d16y8 needs a rebuild but I need my car to be operational. my some-what solution: Buy a second motor, build it at my leisure, swap it in when it's 100 percent. Problem is this motor is surprisingly scarce in the seattle area, I've been browsing craigslist for a week and have only found 2-3 suitable candidates and they wanted around 500-700 bucks.
Since the motor does run... well enough... and a lot of the parts on it other than internals are brand new or damn near all I really need is the bottom end to build/rebuild. I know a lot of people put my head on different blocks but what about the other way around? is an OBD1 block even an option with my ECU? or only the Y-series motors? if I can buy any d16 block from any ef,eg or ek that would be awesome. I might buy two!! knowing ALL my options will make this process much easier...
again just to be clear the car is OBD2, right now it has the factory D16y8, I'm just looking to swap the block, nothing else. which block/blocks will work without modification?
Thank you much for your .02

If you use a y7 block then you'll need to add a knock sensor
If you use a z6 or b7 blocks you would need to do the ckf bypass or swap a y series oil pump and add a knock sensor
Y8 block, you'll need nothing

^Pretty much nailed it. I was actually thinking you did what I did because of your thread title but that's not really a reverse mini-me so to speak.

right on, thank you for the quick answer!! that's all I needed to know. so I guess i'll hold out for a y8 or bare block to go on the market. I'm not in a huge rush to spend extra money to mod a different block. appreciate it guys :-)

Yep, the Y7 uses the same block, the boss is there for the knock sensor. The only thing different about a Y7 bottom end is the pistons, they will raise the compression ratio slightly.

oooh, when I heard " add a knock sensor" I was imagining drilling a new hole somewhere and tapping it...all that good stuff. so since my wiring harness already has the sensor, it would just plug in then?
and as for the pistons, I would more than likely get some vitaras. on that subject, how much power will I lose with vitaras running without a turbo? anyone have experience with that?
thank you for your replies gentlemen
