Replacement exhaust rattling against stock shifter...(not short shifter)
Hey all,
I'm having a problem. I recently purchased an "oem" exhaust to replace my World Sport. The problem is the resonator is rubbing up against the shifter. It's rubbing against what appears to be a weighted piece at the end of the shifter, which I assume is to help carry momentum in the shifter and help it get into gear, though I'm unsure. It makes a loud metal on metal rattle, and shakes the shifter inside the car. I took a picture to help illustrate what I'm talking about.
The only methods I can come up with to fix this problem are a) buy a longer rubber exhaust hanger, b) hammer the top of the resonator to flatten it, c) use a sawzall on that weighted piece.
The longer rubber exhaust hanger bit seems the simplest solution, though no local automotive stores carry this part. Does anyone know where I can order one? When I take the hanger off, the exhaust seems to hang low enough to clear the shifter, though I don't feel comfortable driving it around this way (though I'm sure it's probably fine). If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You could also try bending the steel hanger. Heat it up for a while with a torch, then use a pipe to get leverage on it (and not get burned). I would also pound the resonator in for good measure.

I fixed a similar problem on a friends car. I just took a prybar and bent the exhaust piping out of the way just enough that it would not hit the shifter.

Thanks for quick replies.
HiProfile, I also thought of doing that; however, my first choice is still to get a longer exhaust hanger as it seems to be the 'cleanest' method. If I can't find one within a day, I'll take that approach. Thanks.

it looks like you're already rubbing with the resonator at the height its at now.
i'd bend the hanger, i'm unsure of why you're worried about it being a clean fix, its a hanger for a muffler under your car, just take some pliers to it and be done.

I tried the pliers and couldn't get it to bend. I'll probably have to take the exhaust off to be able to bend the hanger.
I found these, I'm not sure how much longer they are than OEM since they don't give you a dimension...

Re: (KHowe)
I just got the XL hangers from them for my 00 si. They are bout a inch to an inch and a half longer then stock.
But the wholes in the hangers are bigger then the stock hanger hole...so its real loose.
Thats the only reason why i havnt put mine in...i kno chances of the exhaust hangers jumping up and sliding off with my exhaust are low but im not riskin it
