Default Removing starter ring from b-series flywheels: is it possible?

My friend called me today to ask if I wanted to buy some parts off of him, that he was gonna use for his build. I asked why and he said that he was going to need a new flywheel. He explained that he went to start it and the starter just spun freely. So he put a new one on and it did the same thing. He says all the teeth on his flywheel are there but they have to much gap/play in them.

Rather than have him sell his parts and buy a new lightweight flywheel (which would be the performance-smart thing to do) I thought I had read on a build thread somewhere where someone had actually knocked the teeth/gear/starter ring on the flywheel off of the actual flywheel itself. So my main question is this:

CAN IT BE DONE?

I think there is something wrong with his starter rather than something wrong with the flywheel, Now If I'm not mistaken and sorry if I am but these starters "POP ENGAGE" they certainly don't stay in contact with the flywheel at all times, IF his starter is damaged or worn out maybe the gear is not engaging properly and the starter is just spinning in the case. Also there are some times shims on starters or maybe he is using shims and shouldn't be (not any that I know of on a Honda But other brands) Of course if he has the incorrect starter (twice? I know it seems far fetched) it definitely will not work, and also if he has the incorrect fly wheel it will not work either.

As for your questions about the Gear ring, most are Stamped then machined, some are pressed on, and some are billet, IF its OE then it is stamped then there is no way it can be removed or changed. Pressed, hell I don't have a press the size of a medium pizza. Billet, ouch that's a lot of money gone for the wrong flywheel. Can it be done, heck anything can be done with the right $ but I don't fathom beating on the outer ring of your friends flywheel is going to get you anywhere.

All in all your friend should find a suitable replacement or replace everything with stock Honda parts and work forward from there.

Post his engine and trans combo and maybe someone else can chime in with proper part numbers for an OE replacement.

Maybe it's not even something wrong with the starter. If it doesn't get enough power to spin the gear out and engage, it won't work. Make sure the wire running from the large terminal of the starter to the battery is in good condition and clean. Heck, even get a new one from another car. Make sure the battery is fully charged and the grounds are good too.

Pull the bottom tranny/flywheel cover off. Take a marker and place a line on the flywheel/across the ring gear. Have someone try to start the car while someone is watching it. If the ring gear line moves away from the line that's on the flywheel then there is your problem. If not, move on.
