Default Recommend code reader please. Year 2000

I am trying to determine why my stock 00 Si is smoking black smoke in VTEC. 150k mile engine seems to run good. Sound good. No leaks. New plugs, wires, and recent oil and filter change.

Anyways, which code reader is best for this car? Is there any place that rents code readers?

what r u talking about code readers go to autozone and ask them to pull codes if your CEL is on if it is not than there is no point to use a code reader r u sure its not blue smoke for a 150k ur rings are going out

What code(s) is thrown when you jump the service connector? If none, then a code reader will yield the same result (=no codes).

exactly what ron said and like u said ur car has 150K miles! and ur saying that its smoking in vtec meaning HIGH RPMS show me a honda with a stock engine that doesnt smoke past 130k miles its probably ur valve seals and rings you have to get the walls rehoned and re ring the pistons pretty much a rebuild of ur motor

Do you even have a CEL on? You didn't mention it.

Autozone often rents them for $150 (cash returned when you return it), but you can have it done for free or something DIY for free if you just go over and ask them to do it in the parking lot.

Paperclip trick can give you generic codes as well.

Don't expect codes if you're not throwing a CEL already though.

When you guys say smoke, at idle or running?

I have 242k orig engine no smoke. Just an oil leak so far.

I'm not the original owner. Don't know what was done prior to me but I baby it. I don't try to redline it every chance I get to show off to people that probably don't care.

Is the OP not able to pull codes the short and simple way via paperclip? It was never mentioned or not if he was even getting a CEL.

Simplely put.

1. Is teh check engine light on? If yes, for detailed codes, get a code reading done from Autozone, Advane, O'reilleys or the friend of your choice with a code reader (Or buy a cheap one from fleabay)
2 What color is the smoke? You either have leaking oil seals, a bad headgasket, or your timing sucks and its leaving black marks on the fartcan/ bumper.

For best results find a friend who is mechanically knowledgeable and ply them with beers and women (only if they arent married, do not need an upset spouse who will deny you access to them)

If you don't have access to an OBD2 code reader, jumping the service connector to pull codes is a very good substitute.

This. And the OP hasn't mentioned having a CEL, but it's safe I suppose to assume he has one if he's mentioning codes. Jumping the service connector is the easiest solution.
