My brakes on my 98 coupe are about due and my mechanic recommended just upgrading the front rotors to cross drillied\slotted and just replacing drums wit OEM since most of the braking is done with front brakes, RIGHT?
I'm not making crazy power rite now, just b20 swap...maybe vtec head later but thats why i ask now so i dont waste money..

you don't need to unless you are looking for the show car looks and have rims where your calipers and disks will show

although they do bite better I find. You'd notice the difference, the front brakes don't have to work as hard if it's done right. It's not a must though...

depends on if you drive hard on tracks and stuff. Better brakes is always a good idea to me. PasswordJDM has 4x100 rear brake swap/upgrade for only 200 bucks. cant go wrong with that.

i love my rear disc converison.. loooks waaay better .. when i got my wheels i was like "ewww drums" so them i tore em off and put them trialing arms on it..!!! cleaner looking..

i mean.. you can always just paint your drum brakes.. Pfftt i dunno pink? lol

Don't do cross drilled fronts! If you ever get any reall heat into them, they will crack. This has been prooven time and time again. Blank rotors are best for perfomance, but if you must have a fancy rotor, get slots only. Then all you need are really good pads, Axxis Ultimates, Hawk, Cobalt, Carbotec, and some good brake fluide. Everybody recomends ATE super blue. This will keep you from having "warped" rotors (wich is actually uneven pad deposits on the rotor surface) in the future. If you are interested in a rear disc swap, there is more to it than just buying the conversion. You will need a proportioning valve, new rotors, new pads, and new caliper hardware too. Except for the proportioning valve, none of these items takes kindly to being left in a junk yard...

with as light as our cars are i feel that rear drums are plenty suffiecent. if you are going to road race (on a track) I would go with disk though, it seems that they would stay cooler.

i run rear disks on my car, and i go to the track and from running with drums and then to disks, theres a big difference in the way the car feels when braking...

but like people say its not a must

Steer clear of the "bling bling" slotted and cross drilled rotors and just stick to oem blanks with a decent pad. Decent pad meaning not some crap from autozone and not a full out roadracing pad either. The only reasons to go to rear discs are...

1. the drums can create to much heat for a roadracing application
2. discs are far easier to service and maintain
3. there are more pad/compound options for the discs
4. bling factor (I cant believe I just typed that)

In fact from my personal experiences the drums tend to feel and bite better then the discs, on top of that the disc brakes weigh a significant amount more (somewhere around 10lbs per brake I believe). Point being is that chances are real good that you'll never need rear discs or crossdrilled rotors, dont waste your money.

i dont plan on autocrossing or nothin so i guess that the drums wil hold me down for now. is my braking going to be unproportional if i go with reg size slotted up front and oem drum in the back?

what pads are you using up front?

get a good set of pads before you go wasting money on your rear brakes.
