Default Rear Brakes Locking Up

Like the title says my rear brakes keep getting locked up. I recently just upgraded them to disc brakes from a gsr. The car ran fine when I took it around the block a few times for a test. When I turned it on earlier today the rear wheels were wouldnt move. I then loosened the parking cable nut completely and it still was locked. Then I left the car alone for a few hrs and when I came back they were no longer locked. As I took it for a drive again they locked up again on me. Any ideas what could be wrong? What do you guys recommend I check? Thanks.

A couple of things to check for:

1) One or both rear calipers are locking up.
2) One of the rear brake hoses is collapsed inside. When this happens, it acts as a one way valve. When you release the brake pedal, the fluid doesn't leak back into the master cylinderand the brakes lock up.
3) Less likely are the propotioning valve and master cylinder.
When the brakes lockup, open the bleeder screws on the calipers and see if the brakes free up. If they don't, the calipers are locking up. If they do, the problem is in the other parts mentioned.

well i figured out that the rears only lock up after a few times of pulling on the emergency brake. after a few hours they become unlocked. could that be a seized caliper or something else?

Today I went for a ride and both rears locked up after a while. I then pulled over an opened on of the rear bleeder screws and the brakes unlocked. Does that mean my calipers are bad or do I need a new master cylinder or booster?

master cylinder, proportining valve or pinched line.

Start by replacing the brake hose to that wheel. I suspect that hose is bad.

did you install a gsr proportioning valve too when you upgraded, because that is a must as well?

Well I changed both rear calipers and my brakes are still locking up. How can check if my master cylinder and brake booster are working properly? Any help would be appreciated.

I've heard that when some people change out the prop valve that it tends to lock the rear brakes up. Right now I have a set of gsr brakes that I'm going to install and I've only completed the rear swap so far and changed out my m/c to a 15.16 so far they work great. So I guess I'm going to need more input before I install my 40/40 prop valve.

BTW did you have a problem with the e brake lines not reaching all the way? Cause the gsr ones seem shorter and I dont have them connected at the moment.

so you installed a larger booster/mc, & gsr prop valve and added gsr rear disc brakes. Do you also have larger front brakes as well? If not, then you threw your braking system out of balance and could very well be why your rears are locking up.

92-95 si booster/prop valve or ex/gsr fronts would most likely remedy the problem.

You can also try swapping back your old booster/mc. Not the "correct" setup but shouldn't cause the rears to lock up like you are describing.

So far I have installed the rear gsr brakes and the bigger m/c (15/16).

My rear breaks are not locking up at all from driving it around yesterday. I do have the fronts ready to be installed and a 40/40 prop valve.

I just heard that some people on this board had problems with their gsr setup locking inthe rear once everything is installed.

I found the solution to my brakes locking up. I turns out that I was using an ABS brake booster instead of a non-ABS one. I swapped out the boosters and now my brakes are working great. As for the brake cables, I have a 4dr lx and just used 4dr ex cables since ex came with rear disc brakes.
