Rear 02 Sensor Difficulties! HELP!
Hello Honda Techers!
So I have been on this site many times, but never became a member until I had a problem with my 1999 Honda Civic EX. Here's the story:
Engine light comes on, I get the car diagnosed, I need a rear 02 sensor, fuel filter and spark plugs, cool. So I was quoted at 264$ for a rear 02, found a Denso Universal 02 online for 46$. So I got everything shipped today, my cousin (who knows a lot more about cars then I do) and I put everything on today.
We had to sawder the 02 to fit the clip on the civic, so everythings good. We unhook and rehook the battery, and we start the car up. The engine light is off...so we think we're good. So I start it up to drive home, and the light is back on! Now I don't know whats wrong with it, but I've come up with three conclusions:
1. Bad Sawdering
2. 02 doesn't work
3. Do I need to reset the ECU chip?
Any help to get my engine light OFF would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Rear 02 Sensor Difficulties! HELP! (ctsiropo@uwo.ca)
you know unhooking the battery in an obd2 car isn't a way to erase codes right?
3 consecutive warm up trips without a fault will shut the light off and i think it's 80 to completely erase it from the memory.
or you can go back to the shop and have them erase it for you, if they are cool they won't charge you anything.
oh and welcome to H-T

ok so i've been driving it around and lights still on....I've talked to a few people and they say to reboot the ecu to erase the codes....and I was wondering if I could do it myself? Do you just unplug the fuse and plug it back in? if so can someone post a picture of which fuse? thanks

Tutorial: How To Properly Reset Your Ecu
step 1: take your car for a brisk drive to get the motor to operating temperature.
step 2: take your car home, and take the fuse for the ecu out. it'll more times than not be labeled, but on civics and integras it's under the hood for sure. wait 15 minutes.
step 3: put the fuse back in.
step 4: turn the car on. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING. GIVE IT NO GAS. let the car idle for roughly 15 minutes, or until the car is idling smooth at lower rpm's.
step 5: turn the ignition off. ONCE AGAIN, DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE KEY. immediately turn the ignition back on after you have gone to full off. this will store the new settings your ecu has made.
These steps will properly reset your ecu. After they are accomplished go do whatever, the new settings have been stored.

It's your 'universal' O2 sensor. Get one that already has the clip attached so you don't have to do any soldering. NTK or Densor Direc-Fit is what you're looking for.

So I properly reset my ECU and the CEL is still on. Now I don't know what I'm doing wrong. It could be the 02 sensor, but its brand new, and those other ones were so expensive. I just want the stupid CEL light off! lol. Any other ideas to fix my problem? thanks

Doesn't matter that it's brand new when it's the wrong one...
Please don't reply that you told the store what you wanted and that universal sensor is what they gave to you. Yes, believe it or not, stores will sell you "OEM replacement" parts that don't share the same electrical characteristics as the actual OEM part you're replacing it with.

I knowingly bought a universal sensor, because it was a lot cheaper and thought it would do the job to be honest.
I had a question about the ECU rebooting, the fuse that me and a friend unplugged was the " hazard 10a ". Was that the right one? Maybe I didnt do that properly. Im just hoping I dont have to fork over money for another stupid sensor

You want to pull the 7.5A fuse labelled "Back-Up" (Fuse 47).
After resetting the ECU, drive around for a day or two to make sure the ECU sets all the readiness monitors. This is the reason why people who reset their ECU infront of the smog station instantly fail - the tests haven't been completed.
