re: Type-R catalytic convertor
Hi Everyone!
I have an EK hatch with a 2nd gen B16 motor. I've recently busted a hole in my intermediate pipe or rather the welds rusted off where the pipe goes into the resonator.
Now up until now I didn't know that my piping was previously upgraded in my car to some aftermarket cat back exhaust. So I just bought an actual USDM type-r full exhaust including the catalytic convertor. Now there was a problem with the flanges lining up in the cat from my b16 header so I decided to use the cat-convertor that was already installed on my car. (supposedly a type-r as well)
Upon first inspection both the type-r cat (from the new pipe) and my old cat looked the same. My mechanic told me that I already had a type-r cat installed on my car. And the flange for the old cat was also readjusted and rewelded to match the B16 header.
So afterall this long writeup. Here are the questions:
>> Do the type-r catalytic convertor and the SIR B16 convertor look the same?
>> Are there any visual differences in size, colour, shape, etc. that you guys know about?
>> Can anyone post pics of a type-r cat side by side with a B16 99/00 si/sir (canada) cat?
I opted to use the old convertor but not fully knowing if its a type-r or not. I know that the USDM type-r convertors have a 2.25" inlet and 2" outlet. But they looked the same exactly. I didn't measure the inlet though but they looked identical though.
The car is much quieter now for some reason with my 5zigen muffler, but I feel as if I've gained much more mid-range torque and highway acceleration has increased a bit from 5-th gear. Before was just terrible.
>> Does anyone have a type-r full cat-back including cat installed on their ride? If so, what differences have you felt in power if any?
Thanks for being patient. Any help would be appreciated.
J.
I will post pics of the type-r cat I have soon. Not the one installed but the actual one off the type-r piping.
