How do you measure the fluid level in the overflow container of 2004 honda civic. Fluid level is not visible when looking at container and no dipstick is provided. I believe this is a design defect and could be the basis of a lawsuit if I lost an engine. Honda knew that the fluid level is almost impossible to read and an ordinary consumer would not be aware that fluid is low except by loosing an engine.

check your owners manual to see what the proceedure is for checking the coolant level, if that's not clear ask your local Honda dealer how it's done. Thinking about lawsuits at this point in time is a little over the top don't you think?...at least before you check these things out first.

The tube takes a 45 degree bend at the battery bottom and the fill marks are located below the battery approx 1 foot down. The fluid level is not visible when looking at the white plastic container. I opened the cap but I couldn't see down the bent tube, nor could I see the level when looking at the container. The container is translucent like some garden spray containers. Its no good molding the level marks when you cant see the level of the fluid inside.

I have the same design in my 86 civic wagon that I recently acquired as the third owner. It is annoying, but obviously the previous owners found a way to manage not to fry the engine or sue Honda in the last 18 years.

There are two tricks I use. The trick I use when I have work to do on the car (like change the oil) is to just get under the car and look at the fluid level in the overflow. From underneath, I can see everything I need to. It's lovely.

If you don't feel like getting on the ground and/or you have no way to prop the car up, the I suggest a small mirror and flashlight. I extend a very small mirror with a long handle into the engine compartment (being VERY careful not to get anything near the cooling fan blades!!!) and angle it to show me what's in the reservoir. A flashlight is usually pretty handy to shine on the mirror and illuminate the reflection.

If neither of those options sound good, then get a socket wrench and remove the batter and reservoir and take a look.

If you are still at a loss, then get a local mechanic or neighbor kid to take a look for you.

pardon my french but are u that much of dick to even try to make up a poor excuse to come up wit a law suit? honda/acura all have those translucent bottles and all u need is a flash light even better for a person like you just pull the bottle up and look at it. honda been using those type of bottles for the longest. even had it on my 86 prelude
