Re: Questions on motor internals (B18C1 '96 Coupe)
1. How can you tell if your bearings are going bad?
There's a couple ways. First, you'll hear a click that rises and falls w/ RPM. Use a mechanics stethiscope to determine where in the engine it is. You'll hear a louder, clearer click on the bottom of the block if it's the berings. Also, when you drain your oil, look for small leaf-like metal shavings.
2. can you do a small block rebuild without pulling motor?
Yes you can rebuild a shortblock w/o pulling it. Kind of a pain if you ask me, you have to take the head and oilpan/gurtle/pick-up off. Then you're under the car doing most the work w/o much room to work with. It's beneficial to you to pull the motor to do it. Fatuge causes errors-- and plasti-gauging is hard to do under a dark car. Just pull it, it's worth it in the long run, you're not cutting any corners by leaving it in.
3. whats the easiest way to get the crank bolt off?
A heavy-duty air-powered impact driver.... or you can do the DIY H-T special: Get a 10-14" strand of nylon rope which is ~5mm in diameter. Take all your plugs out, and push the rope down in the #1 cylinder. Feed a generous amount of rope into the cylinder when the piston is at Bottom dead center... Don't lose the end either, then you'll have to take the head off. Get a 19mm wrench and turn the crank until the rope compresses and you're not able to turn the wrench by hand anymore. Then get enough extension to get it out of the wheel well. Put a long-*** breaker bar on the end of your wrench and turn toward the front of the car. CREEeeeaaaaAAAK it's off. Back the crank up and pull the rope out.
4. How do you know if valve guides are gone?
compression test... valve guides go bad mostly becuase of bent valves, if your valves are bent, then they won't seal completely, causing a drop in compression.
5. How can you tell if your Valve stem seals are gone?
Leak down test.
