Putting a Cd player in the bottom din of your 96-98 hb
hey guys, i just picked up a 97 hb and was wondering if i could put a cd player in the botton din just above the cupholders and it would have enough room to flip over to put a cd in. I know the accutal cd player will fit, but i dont want to scartch my faceplate when it flips over.
Oh yah and if you got any pics of this please post them up
and mods if this should go to caraudio section please move, but i thought it was just as much eg+civic related as it was car audio related

Yes you can put a cd player there cause the opening is a standard DIN size. So any single DIN cd player will fit.

my panasonic CD player does not flip all the way down because of the volume control ****,...if you have a volume control button then you should be okay,...it will fit,..i didnt have to buy the car kit for it either,..2 screws on each side holds mine perfect

I relocated mine down there for the fun of it, its a 4 door but its the same as a hatch. You don't need to extend the wires or anything, just full the harness down. My car already had a place for the screws to hold it in.

my friend had a 97 cpe and it came from the factory with a CD player in there. Pretty cool. It had a radio/tape combo in the normal opening by the heater controls and such and the CD player was in the lower din opening. There was only a slot for the CD and the controls were on the radio.

Id like to see pics, too. If you've got your head unit in the bottom DIN, what do you have in place of the factory radio opening?

I used to have one there. You can buy a block-off plate for the other opening at the dealer. It is about $30 or so.

it never made sense to me why honda put the stock cd player there. if your driving and have a drink there you have to hold the drink in one hand and try to switch cd's while driving?why move a custom stereo there whats going in the stock stereos place?

About filling in the space up by the heater controls after you pull out your CD-player: I have 2 ideas that i'm not 100% sure will work... 1) Use the tray that you pull from the bottom in the space at the old location. This might be too small, im not 100% sure though. 2) Get part # for tray from 99-00 Civics with the small compartment for stuff right under the stock CD player. Again, this may be too small also, im not sure. You could also get the block off, but it looks kinda ugly, imo.

hybridcoupe97, to answer your questions, imagine you are a thief looking into car windows to see what's inside. If you're looking to grab a CD player, you will probably move on if you see the stock stereo there. That is my I installed my CD player downstairs. It's more of a stealth install.
And for the folks requesting pics, here is one:

widebodyEK, how are you installing the gauges there? What are you using as a block off or what not?.... I've always thought of puttin gauges there and moving the stereo either down or out, but never took the initiative because i wasn't sure what i would use to put the gauges on.

i was just wondering...does your stock stereo work? do you think it would be possible to take the din and put it up where the stock stereo went?
thanks a lot

ok i have my cd player in the bottom din of my EK coupe, but one thing i noticed was that the trim ring for the cd player will not fit flush inside the din like it would in the upper din. if you put the trim ring on it the cd player sticks out and the cup holder WILL NOT open up all the way. i will take a picture of it to show you what i mean tomorrow. it might just be my cd player but if the bottom din is the same size as a normal din then shouldnt it fit flush????

Desn't scratch the deck when the cup holder plate flips up, but it does tend to change my EQ settings when I drive around with a full soda in there.

Re: Putting a Cd player in the bottom din of your 96-98 hb (GapxGuy)
here are pics of mine
stereo bezel didn't fit. the gap doesn't bother me.
what I did in the stock location. as you can see in the full size pic, I cut the stereo surround that did not fit in the lower location to hold in place the pocket that was below.
full shot pic
reason I did this in the first place. with the cup holder left up, its pretty hard to see the stereo especially at night.
kinda hard to see but even with the cup holder open and with drinks in there the stereo isn't touched
it is hard to reach down there to change the station and volume control but my stereo came with a remot control and its easy to remember where the buttons are and I can keep my eyes on the road where they belong.

I didn't install it myself, but the other day I took it all apart to add an internal anteanna. if you know how to unscrew stuf and put it back together it should be a breeze. the only thing that might be hard is taking out the stereo from the console. good luck
