when it comes to body work and paint, its definately "you get what you pay for"
unless, of course, you have a good hook up or somethin'

2k your hatch look very good.
How much do you think the price would go down if i did the body work my self? and just brought a shell into the shop.
Yes i know i should go around asking but i havnt done so yet. Just kinda lookn for an ballpark. Maybe someone on here has done it that way.

Re: prices on color change for hatchback? (Rufus)
Thanks.
I did some of the labor my self. I took off all the easy stuff head lights, tail lights, bumpers, etc. It actully knocked off about $400 in labor. They fixed all the dings and preped and primered the car. If you do all the body work, and have the shop primer and paint only you could probly get it in the $2200-2600 range. But all body shops are diffrent, and you DO get what you pay for. I have not had any majior problems with my paint, and everything that has come up was fixed very quickly and free of charge.

Here's a nice pic of how stripped my car was:
...and after they painted the shell it looked like this:
I mean it was REALLY stripped:
As far as someone saying do your own prepwork - DON'T. I'd say well over 60% of the actual paintjob is all in the prep, so leave it to the professionals. They know what they are doing, and unless you have been doing it for years I'd suggest letting the bodyshop do all of the paint-oriented work.
Also make sure that you tell them EXACTLY what you want painted and not painted. Example? I specifically told the bodyshop that I wanted my bumpers painted O.E where the grilles and bottom trim are left black, like this:
If you don't tell them what not to paint it will end up looking like a Maaco hackjob even if the paint quality is good.
You get what you pay for, and you also pay a shitload more if you are lazy.
You either strip the car down like I did or at least strip down the engine bay on order to get that full color change look, or you pay someone to tear the entire car apart and that will easily get into the thousands because that's a shitload of labor - I know from experience.
If you don't mind having a mismatched engine bay then fine for you, but personally I can't stand to see a nice sweet color only to see a teal, red, blue, white, etc. engine bay. I think black or Phantom Grey are about only two O.E colors that can get away with not having to paint the engine bay, but again that's my opinion.
If you are patient enough and determined enough to tear the car apart yourself and have it done right, then not only will you save thousands but the end result will speak for itself:

I was quoted around 3g's for a complete color change, assuming that all interior, engine, windows, moldings, and lights were removed. I HIGHLY suggest not doing your own body work. Most shops will not like the job you did, and they will charge you more to remove your mess and do it right. I've seen some shops paint engine bays with the engine still in. You would have to remove the wiring and hydraulic lines though, and once you've gone that far, might as well take out the motor too. Gives you a good opportunity to clean it while you wait for your car back.

Yeah, Tom's right. If you want it all done its going to take some serious work. I was lucky enough to have a friend who used to own a body shop, and he worked with me. I did all the bodywork, sanding, and priming and sprayed some of the inside as well. Overall he said depending on where I would have gone it could have been about 4-5k for the COMPLETE change (engine, interior, exterior). Here are some pics.
Before:
Right after, and before buffing and wetsanding:
Finished:
I have more pics of the stripping process and engine bay being painted etc, but I'd have to load them later.

Prices in CA for a quality full color change will range from 2500 and up. It depends on the condition of your current body. Look to spend from 2500-3500.

Re: prices on color change for hatchback? (ill phil)
My homeboy painted his 96-98ex montecarlo black mixed with a cherry red!!!!
ha also had the z3 fenders and an eclipse gas tank put on it and when his car is buffed and waxed its is immaculately gorgeous!!!! he paid like $3500.00 but as far as i can tell its worth it. If you have the money to do it then do it. Make sure you know who is doing your paint though cuz not everyone can spray????
