Default post your innovative way of weight reduction on a 92-95 hatch

Iv been working on getting my car as light as possible and Im trying to come up with some new ideas. not looking for the plain old take the rear seats and spare out (DUH) post your ideas that maybe don't get covered often.

here are a few of min:
exhaust heat shielding (not alot of weight but it all adds up, running open dp. btw)
sawz all'd sheet metal from rear quarters
swapping out dx gas tank to cx tank

at the moment my car weighs 2050 with a 1/2 tank in it and a ls turbo. Id like to be a little lighter. Im leaving doors untouched until I get a 5pt roll bar.

1. Replace glass windows with something lighter (Saran Wrap)!
2. Remove starter and ignition, hardwire and push start!
3. Remove gauge cluster and replace with tiny speedo and tach!
4. Shave your head!
5. Shave everything else!
6. DRIVE NAKED!!!!!!!

I only adhere to number 6 though...

On a turbo car you don't need an exhaust or exhaust heat shields at all....
My downpipe splits into two 2.5" pipes... one has a little silencer on it, the other is a vacuum operated cutout. That is the whole exhaust! lol It is a huge weight saving right there.. at least 40lbs

Next, the sound deadening on the floors + firewall sound deadening was a little over 30lbs (in a DX coupe)

Next, pick up some lightweight seats for the front, I got a momo on craigslist for dirt cheap. You could save 10lbs+ per seat easy

Next, I removed my stereo. It is a big sacrifice for some but is roughly 15lbs of weight

Next you could cut your hood webbing, I saved about 5lbs doing this and it doesn't affect anything

You could gut the dash and remove the heater, that is a nice weight saving of over 30lbs..

You would drive with saran wrap and always park on a hill so you could push start?

I don't think that is practical at all.

cut any extra brackets, fix the windows in place and remove the window regulators, gut the hatch and weld it in place, remove extra trim (who needs rocker panels?), use a lawnmower battery and get a D series alternator if you're B series (need custom upper mount to make it clean, but that's not hard).

Here's one nobody mentions, go on a diet. I know some people on here could easily drop 20lbs...

carbon fiber or fiberglass panels would be awesome, but not exactly an option for everyone here.

Wasn't there an awesome article in Super Street or such years ago about this? Someone wrote in asking how he could beat his friend with some little car. He wanted it very on a budget. I think it might have been a Mirage or such.

They first bean by doing some serious work that one might do to a car.

Then they continued by cutting parts out. Eventually they had little more than a floorpan, drivetrain, seat, steering wheel and column and one piece of the body extending over top of the driver.
