my 98 civic ex coupe has an automatic trans, d16y8 motor and no mater how i drive or what air intake is on it i get 24-26 miles per gallon. i thought these cars got better mileage. thanks

i have the exact same car but manual.. i have chang almost everything from fuel filter, spark plug and wires! but im still doing poor on gas milage.. my next check is O2 sensor and map sensor might wanna check that out!!

Try replacing 02 sensor(s)

and cleaning your MAP sensor nipple, some have reported success doing that. Over time the MAP can get dust/debris in it, so its good to clean it out.

well, first of all, it's a mini me

also, a mini me swap is a good way to get power out of a d series.
it's where you swap the head from a z6 or a y8 onto another d series since those 2 heads have vtec. usually it's done with a y7 or a6 block.

And auto civics in the 6th gen were typically rated by the epa at just under 30 mpg.

one of the O2 is on the header the other is after the cat.. the map sensor is on ur throttle body!!

V-TEC, A/C & cold weather kills gas mileage in these Honda engines. So since cold weather isn't the problem, stay out of V-TEC and don't use the A/C. The A/C will take away at least 2 mpg. If roaring away from stoplights in V-TEC with the A/C on is your thing, expect bad gas mileage. I have the gas mileage from my 5 spd 94 EJ1 in a spreadsheet. From Jan 1-04 to Jun 30-07 I drove 71,112 miles and averaged 34.77 mpg. Monthly averages go down to 30 mpg in the winter and up to 37 in the summer. This is almost all hwy driving with very little A/C use. DC Headers with DC free flow exhaust, K/N filter & Mobil 1 oil. Just did a 1000 mile trip at 75 mph with A/C on to pick up a 99 EJ8 -- 34-35 mpg. I'm not expecting the EJ8 to do as well.

A/C doesnt kill gas milage when your at a constant speed (highway), only at idle and city driving. (^watch mythbusters, lol)

And yes, VTEC or not, agressive driving will kill mileage, leadfooting it will suck gas up fast.

my b16a2 gets 34mpg city constant...i track it every fill up.

Replace your air filter, PCV, change the spark plugs and wires, change the oil and see if that helps.

if not move on to changing the O2 sensor

My turbo sohc is getting 27mpg, half city half highway. But then again I don't really hammer it, clutch clips above 3psi But every on-ramp and stop sign sees that 3-4psi It also has plugs, rotor, cap and o2 sensor that are ages old, just new OEM wires... its such a funny contridiction made better since it works perfect.

I don't know if this will help, but I increased my gas mileage by a few miles a gallon by changing my wheels to VX wheels and using synthetic motor oil. Driving like an old lady helps too.

I got a 96 y8 5-speed. I put on 1700 miles last week and I got an average of 38mpg. Do a tune up if you havn't already, check compresion, and find some small rims with some all weather 195 tires and it will help a lot. I keep a set of ex wheels with some basic all weather tires for trips. Also cuts down on road noise.

Yup, i kept my stock VX wheels and im getting about 370 miles to a tank, using about 10 gallons, so about 37 mpg....get smaller and lighter wheels and prevent downshifting to increase gas mileage.

i have a 99 ex d16y8 and i get about the same the only way i get better milage is if i drive like grandma which is no fun but i have gotten 33 in the city once but on average i get about 25-28mpg

Damn that sucks. You got a problem somewhere. I get close to 50mpg in my hatch and around 42 if I drive the hell out of it. Do a tune-up!

iv got a 99 coupe with a gsr swap and i can get 31 on average. if ur only getting 24-26 id say somethings wrong there.

I bought this car when it had 68000 miles on it. I drove it for a few weeks and checked mileage on every tank. All was completely stock at that time. I have used mobil one 5w30 full synthetic since day one. I did a complete tune up with all honda parts at about 75000 miles. Keep in mind I check mileage on every tank. It does not matter what I do a/c on or not on. I can drive like a 105 year old granny who wears a depends under garmet with aload of crap in it. I have added a header, cold air intake, wheels and tires and I lowered the car to get less wind drag, (not really it just looks cool) No mileage changes. I know these cars are supposed to get way beter than 24 mpg. I just turned 100000 miles now and I am not giving up. Thanks for all of everones help. PS how much power can these motors make without the turbo. Iam considering a complete build up with race parts, crank rods high compression pistons and serious head work.
