please help me with my a/c belt!
When I turn on my a/c, I get an abhorrently loud shriek.....I checked my belt (new belts installed by previous owner) and it's all loosey-goosey, but the PS belt is nice and tight. I'm assuming they're supposed to be somewhat close in tightness. How in the hell do you tighten the damn a/c belt? I looked in haynes, downloaded a shop manual (which showed me where the adjustment bolt was), and had one of my mechanics at work try to help me and I still can't get it. Do you have to loosen the bracket bolts like you do with the PS? I've turned the a/c adjustment bolt both ways...it'll loosen just fine, but won't go any tighter than where it is now. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Jesus....I did do a search. Maybe just the wrong keywords or something (tried every combination I could think of). Thanks Diggity....the only problem I have now is that I can't turn it clockwise anymore...it just won't go. Could it be possible that corrosion is keeping it from tightening any more? Think it would hurt to hook it up to an impact and give it a quick zap to see if that does anything? I really hope it's not the wrong belt....it looks like an absolute bitch to change.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

a better way to put it would be that there isn't any difference in the tension of the belt when the adjustment bolt is all the way tight (as far as I can get it to go) or all the way loose (where I can turn the ratchet effortlessly). what could be causing this?

Re: (moochie972)
loosen the lower bolt (the one that is not attached to the tensioner) so that the compressor will pivot freely when you adjust it...also are you sure the compressor is not locked up, causing the noise?

i had the same prob when i was putting everything back together after my timing belt change i took out the bracket and found the tensioner was stuck, the bolt would loosen but not tighten any further than its current pos, alittle pb and a couple light taps w/ hammer and i was back in bus g/l
