You need to hit it with something that's the same size to keep the head from mushrooming.

ummm use a 1/4" or 8mm punch
r u tryin to put in a short shifter...cuz u dont need to do all that ...it makes it easier ...but possible with out removing it

8mm roll pin punch is the right tool, but the ac compressor bracket bolt with the point works perfect if your in a jam, thats what I always use.

a large sledge hammer starting out makes it easier too.
just make sure you line it up perfectly....and that you aren't banging on your linkage like some sort of animal.

I took a 3/16 nut driver, broke the head apart, and smashed the handle till the shaft came out. When I was done, I had about a 8mm punch and it came out really easy.
So in otherwords, get an 8mm punch lol
