If its just a block...look at the top of the pistons and cyl walls for dings/scrapes/scratches/etc.

look at the casing of the block...how dirty is it...does it look like he cleaned it...

Bring a 19mm socket and breaker bar and see if the engine will spin, should be pretty easy to turn the engine. Also check the stamp on the block to make sure it is indeed what he says. Listen for noises when turning the engine, check for obvious cracks, holes, damage etc. I paid 200 for my entire b18b1 block/head/intake/exhaust

Take a flashlight and unscrew the oil cap, look down inside the valve cover, if it looks like it's full of burnt oil or sludge, pass. If it looks nice and clean it's probably a good engine.

Those cell phones pics are entirely too small and dark. Even the big ones are dark. One is blurry.

Those cylinder walls look smooth as glass. You need a hone.

I would stay away from motors with unknown mileage. I've been burnt before by people claiming a certain mileage on the motor when it wasn't the case. People can be shady and sell you a bad motor.

Thanks for point that out grumblemarc, its going to be a rebuild. Honed, bored, hot tanked. I would usually stay away from things that have a unknown mileage, but the guy started the car on the spot and then pulled the motor so I know it was running.

Well if it's a full tear down and rebuild it doesn't matter then.
